RCCL banning smoking on verandahs as of Jan. 1, 2014

Recommended Posts

They can't fill the ships as it is now another reason for people to look elsewhere to spend their vacation dollars. I don't even smoke that much just an occasional cigar and yes I smoked them on the balcony never when anyone was around but its getting so ridiculous. Yell at me if you want but we have almost 20 cruises between Carnival and RCI I am sure there more people just like me that wont post this for fear of getting flamed, guess we will stick toward Carnival or book AI beach vacations.

That's funny. As per the last 10-K report through 12/31/12, RCCL is sailing at 104.4% capacity. I don't think they are having too much of a problem with bookings.

Can't speak for USA, but in Australia smoking rates in adult population are declining - from around 25% of total population in 2001 to around 18% in 2012 (latest figures available). http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Lookup/4125.0main+features3320Jan%202013

Less people are taking up smoking, more are giving up and the smokers are dying of tobacco related illness, so it is reasonable to expect the reduction to continue. I expect that it is likely to be similar in USA.

So marketing to non-smokers, an increasing %age of the market would seem to be a good marketing option for the cruiselines. And taking away a possible issue for non-smokers cruising ie smokers would also seem a good idea.

Cruiselines are sending more and more ships to Australia & ships operating out of Australia are subject to Australian laws on smoking ie no indoor smoking permitted, including in the casino.

I suggest your contention that the balcony smoking ban will somehow lead to less passengers on cruiseships doesn't match the data. There will be some that elect to take other options, but it is likely that they will be replaced by others.

Princess banned smoking on the balcony and in most parts of the ship a year ago or so. I remember all the whining and complaining along with "I'll never sail xxx again!". Problem is that the various US cruiselines are starting to ban smoking in all but a few select places on their ships so I am not sure where the OP is going to sail.

Smoking is a fire hazard on a ship which itself is very prone to fires even with the new anti-fire material that is mandated for use. Add to that that smoking in the US is on the decline and is banned in many places on land and in airplanes and we are at what took the cruiselines so long?

I agree that it will not be long before ships are all but smoke free except for maybe a single bar that is completely enclosed with its own independent air system.

Statistics from the November 2013 AARP Bulletin page 4:

Ages 18-49 Vs Age 50 Plus

Current Smoker 19% Vs 18%

Former Smoker 17% Vs 36%

Never Smoked 63% Vs 47%

Smoking should be

Banned in public places 65% Vs 71%

Tobacco products should

Be taxed to support health

Care costs. 71% Vs 68%

Smokers should pay higher

Health insurance

Premiums 53% Vs 59%

Doesn't look good for smokers. The figure I was most surprised at was 63%

of 18 - 49 year olds never smoked. That is really high. But really good news!
