That was me - it was part of our muesli discussion. I made it at home, and it was good, but not the same - I think it's just a good cruise tradition.

Yes, it's all coming back to me now! :)

It is definitely best as a cruise tradition.

Let's briefly go back to Roatan. I just realized that I didn't post one of my favorite photos. Our balcony's location allows us to look onto the bridge wing. I enjoyed watching them up there during sailaway - they looked like they were hard at work, although my husband insisted they were probably just playing video games. We left Roatan just after an MSC ship - while we weren't as close as it appeared, it sure did seem for a time we might be playing bumper boats.

Day 4 - Welcome to Harvest Caye. My husband and boys debated the port name all week. If it is pronounced Harvest "Key", why wouldn't they not just call it Harvest Key. Everytime I mentioned it, they would have to joke back and correct me, "no mom, it's Harvest Kay" and then the other would say "you mean Harvest Key?". Whatever they want to call it, we finally arrived. I already felt like I know the island well. Although I had never been there before, between photos, You Tube videos, all the reviews I read and NCL marketing, I knew every inch of the island and what was on it. I was looking forward to seeing it for myself though.

I once again work up earlier than expected. After making my coffee, I took it onto the balcony and watched us pull up to the island. Once again my port side balcony was facing the action. Yay!

We went to breakfast and again sat by the window overlooking the island. As usual, we were seated quickly and immediately greeted by the waiter with coffee and a basket of pastries. Another came by with a tray full of juices, and we placed our order quickly. Today's breakfast selection was eggs, hashbrowns and of course bacon. While we were finishing up (everything was delicious by the way) the Yummy Yummy girls (not sure what to call them so this works) came by. They're kind of like the washy washy folks but with yummy pastry treats. Two cute women in chef hats saying things such as "Wakey Wakey, Eggs and Bakey" and "Yummy Yummy's for your tummy". They had all kinds of chants and they were so cute. And oh, their treats were yummy!

Once finished with breakfast we went back to our cabins and packed up for the day. Today we rented a Pool Cabana so I didn't need to shove 5 beach towels into the bag. That helped!! I was looking forward to the cabana. I had wanted to rent the Beach Villa but it was listed for $699. I just couldn't fathom paying that amount. So, I went for the pool cabana instead.

I had read many times that there were plenty of loungers on the island - but I had also read that the pool fills up quickly. I knew we didn't want to rush off the ship at 8 am, so I liked the idea of having a reserved spot. I thought the family would enjoy the pool more than the beach - especially at that price!! I will say that there are 5 of us.....and the pool cabanas were for 4 people. I was a bit concerned - but in my mind, we could always pull up another lounger, how could they keep the 5th person out? But, I wasn't sure and was worried I'd have to decide which child to banish if they said only 4 were allowed. Maybe my husband? The boys were really looking forward to Wifi. My oldest son was hoping that the wifi would be strong enough so he could study. I didn't see anything regarding wifi and the pool cabanas but I had several people assure me that they rented one and definitely had it.

We were off the ship by 9:30 and headed off for our cabana. Once again we ditched the ship's photographer. I'm a nut for these photos - seriously, I love them. But, they are so expensive that I can't buy them all. So, I pick out some of them and leave the others behind. I hate leaving some of those good photos behind. Then I regret my decision, and it's just not worth the heartache. Plus, my boys (and husband) hate taking them all. Sometimes, it's just easier to say no.

We walked through the Harvest Caye entrance and past the stores. We saw a sign that said "Pool Cabanas". We were told to go right to the cabanas to check in. We booked the cabana months ahead of time, and usually with NCL booked excursions, your tickets are waiting for you on embarkation day. I was surprised when I didn't see anything on Day 1, but figured that must be because there are no tickets - we will just give our name. Sometime during Day 3, we had a phone message from the Shore Excursion desk that said that I hadn't gone by to pick up the tickets yet. True, I haven't. Because I didn't know I needed to. So, the night before I swung by to pick them up.

With ticket in hand we approached the pool cabanas. All 5 of us. My heart was beating fast as this was the moment of truth when I would find out if I'd have to ditch a family member. Maybe if we are only allowed 4 people I could go back to the ship for a massage? I gave the worker my ticket and she looked up and said "there are 5 of you". Yep. There are. She proceeded to escort us in and walk us down to Cabana #4. While walking there she told us that the cabanas are for 4 people. She put black wrist bands on us one at a time while saying she would have to ask her manager if 5 people are ok. I saw my two younger sons had the wristbands and I knew my husband and I did too. Does that mean that my oldest son is out? Oh no. I thought she would come back soon and tell me that her manager told her no go. But, then I noticed my oldest son had the black wristband on too. She gave all 5 of us bands, and she never did go ask her manager or come back and kick us out. I appreciate that - especially because with 5 we spent more money so they win too!!

I was looking forward to spending the day at the pool. The cabanas were removed from the pool and away from the crowds. The pro side of that is it was calm and quiet. And very relaxing. The con side could be that you are away from the pool - I didn't really feel like it was a pool day. If you want to watch while your kids swim, or people watch, that won't happen. But, it's close enough to the pool I easily went to cool off, hang out at the pool a bit and if you have children that don't need constant supervision, it's close for them to go back and forth. Today was hot though. And I mean hot. It was miserably hot at times. We rolled the side flaps of the cabana tent up to create a cross breeze. It didn't work. I'll be honest, there were times during the day that we wished we got the Beach Villa with the air conditioning. Now - I saved $300 so that's mighty expensive air conditioning. But, the thought did cross my mind.

We had an amazing waiter today. I totally don't remember his name but he was young - and very personable. And I will say the smile on his face when I gave him his well-earned tip was memorable. One of the first things I asked him was whether there was Internet. Nope. No wifi. He said they used to have it in the pool cabanas but everyone at the pool was stealing it and it made it too slow for those that paid. I'm not sure why they just couldn't have a passcode to log on - but whatever the reason, no wifi. The boys were sad. I was ok with it - it's pretty nice being unplugged.

I read a lot about Harvest Caye being expensive. We did come prepared, and my husband and I each carried off our fake-Yeti with a double dose of Pina Coladas in each cup. It stayed cold and lasted awhile. We did order quite a bit of food and drinks though. I was shocked at the end when I saw the bill. It wasn't nearly as bad as I was prepared for. I saw reviews of people saying they easily spent $100 on two drinks and two food orders. Well, we ordered 3 beers (Landshark Lagers), 2 margaritas, 3 virgin some kind of smoothie type drinks, shrimp, wings, chicken sandwich, tacos, and chicken strips/fries. Our total bill was $123 before tip.

Soon after we finished lunch, the lady from the cabana next door came over and told us to be careful for ants. She said her daughter spilled some food and they came out attacking. Luckily, all seemed ok with us. Just then, our waiter came up with another Pina Colada which was overflowing and dripping. Those ants immediately came running - they must be drinkers! And incredible amount of ants came to the party. We called the waiter over and asked him if they had anything - I was not looking forward to them spraying and with the heat and no air moving, I didn't want the cabana to stink. Soon someone came with a spray bottle. It was a spray bottle of soapy water. Evidently ants hate that (learn something new every day) and they immediately all died or ran away quickly. Problem solved.

After lunch, we went for a walk around the island. Once we left the cabana area, the breeze was noticeable. It felt a lot better. We saw lots of loungers available along the beach - I was worried with a big ship like the Getaway, but loungers were a plenty!

https://pix.sfly.com/EpJobP

One thing we noticed is that with the heat and bright sun, nobody had their umbrellas up. I later learned that not only were people told not to put them up due to the wind (wish we felt some of it in the cabana) but they were told they would be fined $70 if they did. Wow. Later in the afternoon, I saw one person put their umbrella up. From there, everyone followed one by one. I don't know whether they were rebelling or they got the "all clear" to use them. We walked all the way down along the beach to the Villas then up and around again back to the cabana.

https://pix.sfly.com/wZN7cj

After our walk, my oldest and youngest sons and husband returned to the ship. They were too hot to stay. I was hot but thoroughly enjoying myself. My middle son and I stayed in our loungers reading. Around 3 pm or so we were cooked enough. I realized that with all our walking around, I didn't see the Butterfly Garden or animals. We settled our tab with the waiter and gave him a big thank you for a great day - packed up our stuff (as I mentioned previously, towels are provided for the cabanas so I wasn't quite as loaded down) and went in search for butterflies.

We saw birds and snakes but no butterflies. We walked through the garden - and didn't see a single butterfly. We saw a bunch of pupae but no butterflies. We read that a butterfly only lives for 4 weeks. We must have gone through at the 5 week mark - my guess is those there over the next few weeks will see a lot more than we did.

It was soon time to walk back to the ship. I forced my son to take photos of us on the way back - and hit up some other passengers to take them after my son dissed my selfie skills. We were hot, burnt, tired and ready for a drink - but it was a nice day. If I had to do it all over again, I might spring for the Villa. I think the thing to do (especially if you are just a couple) is to hit up your Roll Call and see who might want to go in halfsies with you. I did really enjoy the pool cabana - and we had great service. It was just so hot!!

Once back on board I stopped at the Atrium on the way up to pick up some drinks. I grabbed one for my husband too - because I'm just that thoughtful kind of wife! We took our drinks onto the balcony and watched the rest of the passengers return on board. I waved a few times up to the bridge - they didn't wave back!!! Yes, I'm probably known as that crazy passenger in cabin 13126.

Soon it was time to shower and get ready for dinner. Dinner tonight was at 6:30 (at least I got the time right tonight!) at Tropicana. It was another night of plentiful wine, good food and entertaining dancing. By this point, we know (well not personally, but we recognize them for sure) all the nightly dancers. We know which ones are good, which ones step on toes and who will be showing off. Our table tonight was literally right on the dance floor. As we were the closet table, they were pretty much dancing right around us. My youngest son skipped joining us tonight to hang with his crew at the buffet.

Tonight I started with Potato Leek Soup. It was so good. Mmmmm. I had NY Strip and Coconut Souffle for dessert. That souffle was amazing! This was the night I realized I was in a rut. Seriously. Prime Rib first night. NY Strip second night. Filet Mignon third night. NY Strip fourth night. I am on a steak frenzy. Red Meat overload. One would think it would get old but it was so good.

Once we finished wining and dining, we went to the Atrium to watch Deal or No Deal. We don't play - but we enjoy watching. Plus, we wanted to be there when it finished so we could grab some good seats. Tonight was the Battle of the Sexes. We don't ever participate in these type of games (I could see myself doing it, but I'm usually way too full!!) but they are fun to watch. Paquito led the boys vs girls through all the typical competitions. And, despite the girls supposedly winning most weeks lately, the boys came through in the end. Seriously - it is so much easier for a boy to dress up like a girl and get applause than vice versa. Although the girls did a great job with what they had!

Tonight was another Howl at the Moon. You know that is my favorite! My husband didn't want to go but middle son came through and went with me. We stayed about an hour - I probably would have stayed longer but tomorrow would be an early day and I already saw that tonight we would be moving our clocks forward an hour. Howl at the Moon was as fun as always - and Tambourine Girl was there doing her thing. It was hard to leave but I knew I would regret it if I stayed out too late.

Tomorrow is an early day and we are so far from being hungry. So, we decided it made sense to just order a Continental Breakfast from room service. I love the chocolate croissants and can eat them all morning. So, we filled out the order form for coffee and croissants and hung it on our door. As I was doing so, I noticed "tree mail". This is what we've always called the correspondence that NCL hangs outside our door - you know where your cabin number is. We've received a few other things over the week so far. One was an invitation to the Captain's Party (we couldn't go, as it was the same time as our Cagney's reservation) and another was advertising some special. This letter wasn't so great.

Our tree mail was a letter from Housekeeping. It told us that they would be doing maintenance on our balcony the next day in Costa Maya. It would be a 5 hour job from 8 am to 1 pm. What? What about my continental breakfast and coffee on my balcony? I have to be out of my room by 8 am? And with the time change - I'd have to be up and dressed? I'd like to think I'm a very understanding person. I get it. Things need to be done. And when you have passengers each week someone has to be put out a bit. I'm game for that. I'm really ok with the work. But 8 am???

I think I need to hug my new friend to get through this......

https://pix.sfly.com/eBPRO_

I crawled into bed for my nightly ritual of reading the Freestyle Daily, moved my phone forward an hour, and went to bed wondering if maintenance will be pounding on my door before I wake up.

Hey ljrfrm, Sorry to hear you that maintenance interfered with the tranquil balcony coffee and croissants. I love having a balcony and am shocked when I here people say they hardly used theirs! I'm sure you didn't let that negatively affect your day. Did you hear anything in passing about folks venturing to Placencia and their experience there? Eagerly awaiting how you made the rest of your day go.

I didn't hear anything about Placencia - but check out the review from CTnewcruiser that was also posted for the same week. There is a section on Placencia that you might find helpful.

And yes, I sure do love my balcony.

I set my alarm to wake up at 7:20. I figured this would give me enough time to wake up and throw on some clothes before maintenance showed up at my cabin. While the letter made it sound like I wouldn't have any access to my cabin between 8 am - 1 pm, I remained in denial, or maybe I just refused to be packed up and out of the cabin by that 8 am time. Our plan was to have room service between 7:30 - 8:00 am, and just hope maintenance didn't arrive early. We'd leave when we had to - but not before.

A small side note here regarding my phone. As I've previously mentioned, I debated about changing the time on my phone each time the ship sprang forward or back, or just calculating the new time on my phone. As I knew I'd be setting alarms and also drinking with my UBP, I decided it was much safer and easier to change my phone to the new time zone. As I was setting my alarm to wake up for room service and my maintenance friends, I notice an alert on my phone. It was a calendar alert for my Southwest flight home. It said SW flight such and such, then it said 10:40 am. What? I scheduled a flight at 10:40 am, and out of Fort Lauderdale? What was I thinking?? We had planned to stay on board on the last day until 9 am. That won't be possible now. I'll have to get up and out early. My two older sons and husband were all flying out of Miami - and all after 1 pm. So, I'd have to wake up and get out quickly - but it totally didn't make sense for them to do that and have more time sitting at the airport. Again - what the heck was I thinking. I stewed on this all day in Costa Maya - and it wasn't until the next day after I had changed to the new time that I realized it then said my flight was at 11:40 am. That's when it hit me. My calendar alert was changing the time to match the 12:40 pm flight Eastern time. It wasn't 10:40. It was 12:40 like I thought all along. Silly me. Really - I thought I was a smart person. Why do I do these things??

Back to Day 5 and I started waking up before my alarm before 7 am. I was worried about being up for room service (they used to call 5 min before they came - I miss that - they just show up at the door now). After tossing and turning for a few minutes, I got up and made my morning coffee. After dressing I went out onto my balcony to wait for breakfast to arrive. The room service tag stated that 2 croissants are included per order. So, we ordered 2 orders - in other words, 4 croissants. We also placed 1 order of a fruit pastry (which said included 2 pastries). Our pastries and coffee arrived via room service right at 7:30. My husband let him in and I came into the room to give him a tip and said thanks. Once he left, I looked down and noticed we didn't get 4 croissants and 2 fruit pastries. We got 2 and 1. In other words - there was one per order, not two. I quickly ran out the door and yelled "excuse me" down the hall. He turned and I told him we were shorted croissants. This was our only breakfast (ha, like we would starve) and I was craving my chocolate croissants. I of course was nice and he smiled and apologized and said he'd bring more. The man was back in 5 minutes - he was fast!! And he brought like 6 more chocolate croissants and 6 fruit pastries. Score. My boys also ordered room service as well.

8:00 am rolled around and no maintenance men were in sight? This is a good thing - but honestly I stressed and got up early and dressed and all of this and they didn't come. It kind of reminded me of waiting for a delivery at home. You hurry up to get there and then just wait. In the meantime, I was sitting on the balcony eating my breakfast, drinking my coffee and watching us pull into Costa Maya. Another happy day - our port balcony for the third time is facing the port. Awesome. The water was rough. It was hitting to dock and splashing over and looked like it was just missing passengers who were now getting off the ship. At first I thought it was because another ship was docking but later realized the ship was already docked - it was just rough.

It was a windy day in Costa Maya. After watching the water splash onto the dock for awhile, I gathered up our things (including the 5 NCL towels) and stuffed everything into the beach bag to once again lug everything to the beach. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with this big beach bag. By this time it's 9 am and still no sign of the maintenance crew coming into my cabin. Not that I'm complaining!!

The boys finally were ready and came by our cabin and we headed to the elevator to leave. As we were heading out, we saw our room steward Rommel who said hi. I always love it on NCL when everyone greets you by name. I haven't really mentioned Rommel yet in this review but he deserves two thumbs up. Rommel wasn't the most outspoken guy - he seemed a bit on the shy side. But, he did a wonderful job keeping our cabin clean, replacing towels as needed, clearing out our room service and daily treats plates, and just basically doing what a good steward needs to do. We didn't see him as often as some of our past stewards, but when we did there was always a smile and a hello using our names.

We took the elevator down to Deck 4 and walked off the ship at 9:15. The water was splashing up and hit a few passengers. They stopped using the right gangplank which was drenched with water, and we quickly shuffled off the left side. Success - we made it off the ship dry. Although it was very windy, the sun was out and the weather was warm. I had a paper with directions on where we were to meet our ride - we were going to Maya Chan and I was excited as I had read so many great things about this place.

As we were walking out, despite the directions I was a bit unsure we were heading the right way. I asked to make sure and we were fine - "just keep going straight and follow the family in front of you" the man told us. After a quick walk outside the port, we found the Maya Chan employee on the corner. Once there, he told us that there was a lot of seaweed at Maya Chan and he gave us the option to cancel with no charge. Given the high winds that day, I was not surprised to hear of the seaweed issue. I had already been warned of seaweed, both from Maya Chan upon reservation and also from reading so many reviews. I had already decided that even though seaweed could become an issue, we would still go. Seaweed will not stop our fun!!! We actually had to sign a release, stating that we were aware of the seaweed issue. I didn't mind doing that - signed on the dotted line, and then we were told our van would arrive for us in 5 minutes. After a short wait all five of us along with another party of 5 climbed into a van and headed to Maya Chan.

The drive didn't take long at all - and definitely seemed short following our traffic fiasco in Roatan. We had read that the road there would be extremely bumpy and full of potholes but we found out that the state actually finally fixed the road. I'm sure the taxis and vans are very happy this was finally done. Along the way, we saw miles of beach. And seaweed everywhere. It's definitely not just Maya Chan with the seaweed concern. Our van was a slower driver than others I guess, because we were passed by a faster van full of guests. Had we been in The Amazing Race I would have been bummed at being passed!

There were three vans that arrived at the same time, and the Maya Chan folks had multiple greeters there for us. We were shown around, taken to our own private palapa (some had more shade than others, ours was larger with great shade and a hammock) near the second bar. The palapa had multiple chairs, a comfortable bed, hammock and two tables. The boys and my husband stayed under the palapa in the shade but I quickly moved into the sun. The chairs were like adirondack chairs and they each had a seat cushion. I asked them for a leg rest (I saw other groups had some) and they immediately found one for me. Before we had a chance to even settle in, we had a plate of chips and guacamole on our table and the waiter had taken our drink order. I think I am going to be very happy here!!

So, I don't need to pack beach towels if I want a towel to take & use off of the ship? NCL provides those? Thanks! Enjoying your review!

Thanks! Yes, NCL will provide you each with a big beach towel! No need to bring one!

Day 3 is Roatan. Oh Roatan, how I missed you. We owned a vacation home in Roatan until about 7 years ago, and enjoyed spending 2-3 weeks there each summer. It makes me sad when I see reviews from passengers who didn't leave the port/Coxen Hole area. Especially when they report that Roatan is dirty, ugly or boring. That makes me sad because it is such a wonderful island. We've played at beautiful beaches, swam with dolphins, petted iguanas, zipped our way through the trees and ate many amazing meals. There is some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving (disclaimer: I have never dived before, but it is on my bucket list) you can find. There are green lucious jungle areas and beautiful sunsets. There is so much to see if you can look past the poverty and get out and see the island. We were excited to return and took our time deciding where we wanted to go.

The day began at 7:45 when we woke up. I had hoped to sleep later but with the additional time change, my body did not agree to that plan. Once awake, I went into the bathroom and discovered our toilet was kaput. It wouldn't flush, it wouldn't even make a noise. I called my husband into the bathroom to try - thinking maybe it was only on strike with me. But no, it was a goner. I went and called housekeeping (I debated between them and Guest Services) but nobody answered. It just rang and rang. I was trying to figure out which number to try next when I had an idea. The day before we received some chocolate covered strawberries from Errol Bailey, the Hotel Director. The card said not to hesitate to contact him if we needed anything. I did hesitate - do I bother him? At 8 am? I decided that quickest way to a working toilet may be through Errol Bailey so I went for it. I called, told him we were toiletless at that moment, and he told me he'd get right on it (not that he was actually going to get on my toilet!). I immediately got dressed in case someone was coming to the room.

I made my morning coffee and went out onto the balcony to enjoy the peace and look to see if we were closing in on the island. About 30 minutes later our toilet flushed. All by itself. Nobody came to the room, but my guess was someone did something somewhere. I have no idea who my vacation hero was - but thanks for fixing the john. I try to roll with the punches when I travel. Sometimes things go wrong. I can't promise how long I would have kept that attitude without a toilet, but I handled the 30 minutes without one like a champ!

We arranged for the boys to come to our room at 9 am for our morning meal. We went to Savor for breakfast and got our table by the window. This was great as we were able to watch us sail by parts of the island and pull into port. My Day 3 breakfast of champion consisted of Creme of Wheat, French Toast and crispy bacon. As in each morning, the service was great, and we enjoyed the meal. My husband made a comment that the coffee was actually much better than he expected. That says a lot!

We soon realized that we needed to finish up and get back to the cabin to pack up and get ready for our day. When we got back, I went onto the balcony to check out our view. I love it when my balcony faces port. I enjoy seeing the views, watching passengers (especially those all so fun pier runners) and watching sailaway. I was glad to see that I had a great view of the port.

When I cruise, I have a specific beach bag I bring each time. It's a big beach bag. I mean gigantic beach bag. I bought it at LL Bean and it holds everything, you probably could even shove a coat rack into it. I packed up the bag with 5 NCL beach towels, multiple suntan lotions of every strength you could think of, changes of clothes, hats, tablets, and the kitchen sink. Somehow, I always become the pack mule of the family and lug the 60 pound bag around all day. I swore this trip that each family member will take a turn carrying the baggage.

Once the jumbo bag was packed and we were all ready to go, we took the elevator down to Deck 4 to disembark. It was 10:30 at this point and there were no lines and we were quickly off the ship. We dodged the photographer and headed off on our way.

I have been thinking of purchasing a LL Bean bag, which one did you get?

I bought it many years ago. I just went to the LL Bean site but I don't see it anymore. It's not a canvas one - but a lightweight vinyl. It has a zipper closure which I would definitely recommend. It's similar to the "Everyday Lightweight Tote" but ours was an XL size. As much as I love it, I think it's too big - as I've mentioned, we just stuff way too much in it. It's so lightweight that it's easy to fold up into our suitcase for travel.
