Santa Marta, Colombia on your own?

We are visiting Santa Marta in December on NCL. There are no NCL Excursions offered. It this a place where you can get off on your own and explore? Are there any suggestions on places to see? Or is it better to get a taxi or hire a tour? I can't find much information on this port.

Thanks

We were on lesliew's cruise.

We had a decent day out with The Day Trips, guide was good, and it was cheap (US $160 total for a full day)...

...but there's not much to see in Santa Marta. The guide was from Cartagena and he said we'd like Cartagena a whole lot better... he was right.

The cathedral is OK. The Quinta where Bolivar spent his last days is more-than-OK if you are interested in Bolivar. Otherwise, erm... not much.

The beach our fellow cruisers went to was good, they said, but there wre lots of cops out refusing to let people walk the trail to get to the beach... they said it was too dangerous to walk the trail, take a cab.
