Smoking on MSC?

I think what you've read was wrong - on the existing ships and depending on itinerary smoking is allowed in half the casino and half of the pool deck and in the cigar lounge (Fantasia class) in the pub on Lirica class

From what I've read about Meraviglia (haven't been on it yet) smoking is allowed in fewer places

I love casinos but the MSC ones are so smokey it's like running the gauntlet to get through them :(

When did you last go? On our Fantasia cruise in April, smoking was only in half and it seemed pretty ok :) I think I read on a Meraviglia thread that smoking isn't allowed in the casino so would expect Seaside and Seaview will follow the same

I'd be very interested to hear about people's more recent experiences on Meriviglia since I'm considering Seaside next year. I'm sensitive to smoke, so curious if smoking is in fact not allowed, or only in 'half the casino' is noticeable.... (and does half mean there are tables/roulette in both a non-smoking and smoking section)? I read somewhere that it is up to the casino manager? (but this may not be a reliable source).

On Fantasia in April smoking was in the half that was fully populated with slots, the tables were all in the non-smoking area

  • Smoking Policy MSC Cruises respects the needs and desires of all guests, and we have given careful consideration to the preferences of both those who smoke and those who do not.

In line with global standards, smoking areas are generally fewer than nonsmoking areas, but smoking is freely permitted in specified areas throughout the fleet (selected mainly on the basis of increased or modified air extraction). Smoking is not generally permitted in any food service areas (buffets and restaurants), medical center, childcare areas, corridors or elevator foyers, areas where guests are assembled in groups for safety exercises, disembarkation or tour departures, public restrooms, or in bars directly near areas where food is served.

Because of the specific and proven risk of fire, smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is not permitted at any time in staterooms or on stateroom balconies. If evidence of smoking is found, a special cleaning fee of 70 euro will be charged to the Guest’s account.

Smoking is permitted in several bars on each ship, and on one side (indicated by signage) of the principal outdoor pool deck areas, where ashtrays are provided. Guests are advised by the Cruise Director and in the Ship’s Daily Program to avoid throwing cigarette butts over the side of the ship, where they could be blown back on board and start a fire."

Smoking is not permitted in the casino on Meraviglia. It most likely won't be permitted in the venue on Seaside as it is not allowed on Divina which it will be a more similar experience to. I imagine that a lot of things that are done differently on Divina to the rest of the fleet will also apply on Seaside as service, facilities, etc are more US focussed. (Another 'difference' is food being free in Sports Bar and also existence of omelette station - these don't apply elsewhere).

Well we are sailing on SeaVIEW in the Med, not on Seaside in the Caribbean. I understand that MSC have "americanised" the ships sailing from the U.S, but what about the ships in Europe?

Thank you, this is good to know, and sounds like a reasonable assumption. I've just started to research about MSc so I really appreciate these types of comments - being new to this cruise line, I'm still learning about the different ships, so learning about trends are important, etc :)

Cheers!

  • 2 months later...
Just got off of the Divina a few weeks ago and the area in the casino with the table games and the bar itself are both nonsmoking.

The area with the most slot machines was smoking if the guest was gambling.

This is surprising. Any reviews I've read about Divina since she went to Miami was that smoking was prohibited in the casino.

They recently changed it on the Divina and what I just read online about Seaside is that it will also be partial smoking in the casino. I guess they decided to try it out on the Divina first?

I like to play tables and it was great to have it smoke free but I occasionally like the slots but it was smokey.

If there is smoking (somewhere) in the casino, can you still actually enjoy a smoke-free feeling/environment at the tables?

It seems to me that MSC has reckoned that smokers spend a lot of time (and money!) in the casino when smoking is permitted. I can't think of any other reason why they would have changed their policy, otherwise. Smoking was prohibited in the casino on Meraviglia when we sailed on her immediately after her inaugural, but I've since read on here that they are now allowing smoking in one section, too.

The table area was completely nonsmoking and far enough away from smoking area to remain clear of the smoke. The bar area is in between and it was also nonsmoking. They had 2 entrances, if you entered the right one you never hit the smoking area.

That does sound better than most cruise casinos, but I am still disappointed they have changed their policy.

Four weeks ago there was no smoking anywhere in the casino or casino bar on Divina.

The only indoor place to smoke was the cigar bar and the outdoor area was the Garden Bar on Deck 15

That was it!:D
