Marelvy Tours report

We just returned from the 10 day partial on the Coral Princess which included a stop in Cartagena. I booked a private tour for 4 with Marelvy Tours and it was great [emoji106]. Cost was $95 pp plus we tipped the guide and driver. We traveled in a nearly new small van which was air conditioned and very comfortable. We had a guide, Katty and driver, Juan Carlos. This allowed me to leave my big backpack with water etc in the car at our stops. They were very professional. We were met at the end of the pier and picked up the car outside the port shopping/animal area. We visited several of the neighborhoods in the old city, a photo stop at the walls of the city, the San Lorenzo fort, the house of the former president Rafael Nunez, and several very old gorgeous churches (from mid 1500s, the youngest being from early 1700s). We finished at La Popa Monastery for the spectacular city view. The tour included all admissions to museums.

I am very glad we did this tour because we got so much history and information about how the people lived in the past and today. We avoided the crowds from the tour buses, arriving before or after them ; Katty explained how to minimize the street vendors ( no eye contact and a firm “no gracias”). I spoke with several people who did either their own thing or the hop on hop off bus and they got very little out of the day, just complaints about the heat and the street vendors.

You could do the old city on your own but I’d recommend having a guidebook so you would know what you are seeing, otherwise I don’t think you’d get much understanding.

I booked this by reviewing the company website and then exchanged a few emails for the details. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn’t like to travel in a crowd and wants the most out of their day. We were back to the ship with plenty of time before sail away.

Happy to answer questions if I can.
