A Martha's Vineyard Question

Are the Victorian Cottages within walking distance from where we are tendered in to Oak Bluff? What else is within walking distance that may be of interest?

Yes, the cottages are within walking distance from Oak Bluffs, just ask anyone for directions, it's less than a 5 minute walk. Oak Bluffs is a small, old-fashioned New England beach town -- you will find a pretty harbor, a beach with a sidealk for a stroll, an old-fashioned carousel, and some good restaurants and small shops. Not sure how much will be open after Labor Day, however, although many probably open up on cruise ship days.

Its nice to rent a Jeep there and take a drive around......there is a lot within walking distance......but the island for the most part is pretty quiet.

We just got back from 9/4 cruise. We walked to the EAst Chop Lighthouse and spent time admiring the beautiful view. The town has a nice city park with an old church, and a few statues to see.

The tender will let you off at Oak Bluffs harbor. From there, go to the main street. Facing the street, on your left you should see the Flying Horses carousel, the oldest platform-type carousel in the world. Catch a brass ring and get a free ride! Also to the left is Mad Martha's, excellent ice cream. Further to the left is the long ferry dock you saw on the way in on the tender. Also up there are the public rest rooms:D .

To get to the gingerbread cottages, go across the street from the harbor and go up Circuit Ave. As you go up this street, passing the movie theater, candy shop (used to be much larger) and various restaurants and gift shops, eventually you will see passageways on your right. Go in one of these and you will be in the Campground, where the cottages are. In the center of the Campground is the Tabernacle, used for meetings and performances. Every week in season they have community sing-alongs. The cross on top of the Tabernacle is lit at night and is visible 50 miles to sea. Just stroll through the area and get lots of photos of the cottages - they're painted all sorts of colors. Ask for directions to the famous pink cottage.

If you walked up to the ferry dock, you should be able to see Ocean Park with the bandstand (Sunday concerts!). Take a walk through the park and go down one of the streets opposite the beach and you will end up on Circuit Ave. again.

There are also busses that can take you to Edgarstown, Menemsha, Tisbury, etc. I don't know if they run after Labor Day. Most other things should be open, as the season has extended into December.

Oh, yes, for those who like fried clams, get the fried clam dinner at Nancy's, next to the harbor. Whole clams, not clam strips. The best!! A bit pricey, but worth it.
