There are groups that "cruise sober" or do land vacations (one group books an entire Club Med for their week away e.g.). Google Cruise sober or sober cruise and a number of them will pop up. Some are doing Med or Alaskan cruises too.

As for entertainers, you can have your pick of those in recovery in almost any genre, rock or country.

One thing I wouldn't want to do is have all the headaches that accompany organizing such an event. I worked in chem dep for 20 yrs and got so many headaches there that I decided to retire, LOL.

Just wondering. I used to go to all the Friends of Dorothy Gatherings but this next trip may be better off with Friends of Bill. I used to notice the meetings listed on previous cruises...but I was busy drinking. Anyone sailing from Ft lauderdale to Caribbean for Holidays? Just wondering....

I've just signed up for mailing lists to get updates on upcoming sober cruises. Really think this would be fun.

There are several companies doing sober cruises as well as land vacations. One company has been chartering an entire Club Med for a week just for persons in recovery. Some of the cruises go to pretty exotic areas like China and the Galapagos.

Enjoy your search!

My first cruise was in 1999 on Carnival's Elation and when I walked into my first seagoing Friends of Bill meeting there was I guy who I had known 30 years earlier from meetings in Phoenix. He had moved to Texas in about 1969, but we both were still sober! How neat!
I have done 34 ocean cruises after that first one, and the meetings have varied a lot, with a few cruises on smaller ships like the Oceania Regatta c ehlass having no one else show up at all.
I remember a Princess Baltic cruise where there was a husband and wife who were part of the ship's entertainment. She sang and he played the sax. She had gotten sober in LA, but they met at a meeting in Poland where they both lived.
My next cruise is in September on Viking Sky where I hope to show off my 50 year medallion.

I am so happy this thread is here. We have been on 10 cruises and before six of them I would post under the Roll call that if there were any Friends of Bill W on the cruise, that my husband and I would be at the first meeting and that I hoped to see them. My husband and I are both recovering alcoholics who stay active in our programs and we always go to at least the first and second scheduled meetings on the cruise. Most of the time no one comes to the meetings, but there have been other very interesting meetings. On our first cruise there were 8 people at most of the meetings. That was huge. One time they scheduled the meeting in a bar, which would not have been too bad if it was not open and serving drinks to people. Then there was the time on the Miracle where the meeting was in the chapel and on Sunday and two families showed up for church. My husband and I and one other alcoholic were there and it ended up with us talking about how alcoholism affects families. You never know what you are going to get in the ship meetings, but it is always interesting.

My SO, me and two very close friends travel together often. We are all active in our ongoing sobriety. We looked for "Friends of Bill W." and it was listed on the community board. We went to the assigned area at the correct time and were slightly puzzled. It was held in a swanky club-like area, but was in the afternoon on a sea day. We first saw people having drinks, and then looked at the sign at the door. "Welcome Bill and Wilma--50th wedding anniversary"! They evidently shortened the sign on the community board to Bill and W. We just saw the Bill W part!

Never a dull moment in this adventure called recovery . . .

a not so busy web site that could be very busy-the last time I went to a friend of bill meeting on a ship, I was the only one who showed. I sat in the piano bar of the fascination, and contemplated the years of my sobriety, what I had received, what I had lost-basically who I had lost to this disease. it had been years since I had attended any land meetings, but I haven't been drinking. this November was 27 years, and I am married to someone who is not ready (?) to give up drinking yet. it can be done, but it isn't easy. I think that cruising is actually quite easy sober. there is so much serenity in the sea, the colors, the motion, it inspires me to continue on my path.

cruise happy. I needed to talk to a friend of Bill's today, so thanks for this site.

My father was sober for the last 8-10 years of his life. I was so proud of him, so grateful to AA, and so impressed at the way he continued to help others for the rest of his life. And grateful to have a chance to get to know him without an alcohol haze in the way. Every time we cruise I am struck by the challenges faced by anyone on board, surrounded by package drinkers, trying to gain sobriety in the midst of all that. And I have been so appreciative of Royal and Celebrity who without fail host the Friends of Bill meetings. Best wishes to you all!

my name is marshhawk, and i am an alcoholic. I didn't even see Friends of Bill W on our last cruise. The next cruise is a 7 day on the Elation again , so I will be looking for meetings-even if it's just to be with other non drinkers. I am thinking that a 7 day on a Fantasy class ship will have some low key cruisers-but after looking at my roll call, not so sure. But with more free time, i think it's high time I got back to a meeting.

the first time I saw Friends of Bill on a cruise schedule, I didn't understand. I sure wondered about Bill having lots of friends. Now I know that these friends can keep me sane anywhere in the world.

We are sailing on the Allure, July 1st.... as I look on the Cruise Compas posted for this week, I don’t see any listing for Friends of Bill W. As there used to be. Do they not have this anymore??

Hi-I am not sure, but if its important to you, call the ship co and ask them. Once onboard, if nothing is listed, I would ask the purser to add the meeting and get it set up & on daily bulletin One never knows, there might be people on board that don't ask/speak up and could use a meeting..... I've attended meetings while onboard, very small turnouts but as you know it only takes 2. I brought my Big Book and read on the balcony during what would have been happy hour Enjoy your cruise & if nothing is happening, be proactive.

I was on a relatively small (980 pax) ship and there was no Friends of Bill W listed in the daily ships news bulletin, so I spoke to the Cruise Director and he put it in for a couple of days. Two others with a lost of time showed up the first day, but not thereafter. I am 50 years sober, and have been to lots of shipboard meetings since I started cruising in 1999. Some ships have very active meetings, and others not much at all.
The first cruise I was on I ran into a man who I had known 30 years earlier in Phoenix before he went back to Texas. Both of us still sober!
Keep coming back!

We two too have had many interesting experience at FOB meetings aboard ship. Made some long time friends. Better turn outs on longer cruises. We make it a point to at least show up. First family cruise 1998, popped into meeting just briefly but it was a great relief, i try to pass that on.
On comment card, always thank the line for providing FOB.
