Flying economy class with Emirates to Dubai

Does anyone have experience of Emirates' economy class? I have read on boards elsewhere that if you aren't business or first class, you can expect very little consideration from the cabin crew. Is the economy cabin any better/worse than BA's on an overnight flight? Any advice very welcome.

We have been flying economy on Emirates for years and have found it to be much better than BA, which we also flew for many years(from Saudi) before we discovered Emirates. Still trying to make use of my BA airmiles but failing miserably as there is never anything available. We now live in Australia and find Emirates the easiest and quickest flights to go back to the UK. Emirates also fly direct from Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester , Dublin, Heathrow and Gatwick to Dubai which saves flying to Heathrow and changing planes there. There are also usually at least 2 flights a day from each of the UK destinations and connection times in Dubai are very good. The entertainment system is very good as well and I make full use of it as I am a non-sleeper on an aircraft. We have managed to get a couple of upgrades to Business on Emirates with airmiles on short sectors so have experience of both classes. Maybe if we win the Lotto! We have never had any problem with the crew, they have always been very helpful. There will probably be lots of people who haven't enjoyed their flight on Emirates for various reasons and maybe BA have got better. Also on the 777 aircraft there are several rows of 2s at the back of the aircraft, much better than the 3s.

Found the economy on Emirates to be superior to BA - so much so that we chose to fly Singapore to London via Dubai on Emirates rather than direct with BA!

Add another supporter of Emirates...and we've only ever flown economy on there

We have flown Emirates economy often to Europe from Australia, never had a problem at all. The entertainment is good, as I dont sleep theres hundreds of movies to keep me entertained.

 

The crew like to sleep or rest too, so late at night we've found that if you order an alcoholic drink , you'll receive a couple, which is ok with me :-)

Yes we love Emirates too. What you described above though sounds very much like Qatar Airways. We flew with them once and they left us with small children in a VERY hot bus on the tarmac for ages while we waited for the upper class passengers to arrive in posh cars. They obviously didn’t want us to be in their way but it took so long that there would have been plenty of time to get us onboard and seated. We said NEVER again :-(

Next year we are flying to San Diego to pick up a cruise and flying back from Vancouver. If only we could fly in Emirates economy we would be ecstatic. Not enamoured with BA these days.

The problem with flying Emirates via Dubai as opposed to another airline direct is that you could end up like my son, stuck in Dubai because the first flight was late and missed the connection. Then it was several days before they could find empty seats on another flight to take them on to NZ. OK you get a free mini-break in Dubai, but not good if you miss your cruise! Luckily they weren’t cruising. So always add several extra days pre-cruise to allow for this.

Another fan of Emirates economy. We have 3 flights a day from Manchester to Dubai. Most times they are serviced by the A380 (at certain times of the year one is replaced by a. B777).

 

One tip is check out the configuration of the aircraft you are due to travel on.

 

If it’s a A380, and it only offers Business class and Economy seats, then there will be an Economy section on the upper deck.

 

The benefit of this is that the seating is configured 2 4 2 across the cabin, so if there is only 2 of you then you may be able to just sit together and there are bins at the side under the window that are great for storage.

A word of warning though, if the aircraft is not full, Emirates will keep the economy seats immediately in front of the upper deck business class cabin empty and will not make them available for pre selection so that the business class passengers are not disturbed by us lesser mortals. I kid you not, I have that on authority from our Emirates rep.

 

This was the case on our last Emirates flight, but after a quiet word with a senior cabin attendant about the row of 4 unsupervised children immediately behind us who were taking great delight in kicking the backs of our seats (even before we took off), she got one of her colleagues to escort us to the empty section which for an hour or so we had completely to ourselves.

Totally agree regards Qatar. First time to Dubai took the cheaper option flying via stop at Doha. Herded out like cattle then almost as quickly back onboard on same aircraft. Very poor service for economy.

Compare that to Emirates prompt and attentive service overnight, on full aircraft. On return journeys the plane barely half full enabling a good few bottles of New Zealand's finest to be enjoyed.

Another vote for the quality of Emirates economy class. I’ve done a couple of round trips from Manchester to Singapore via Dubai, and they were very good. I like the A380 - it seems quieter than many other aircraft. (Not been in a Dreamliner, though.) I’ve also enjoyed the food with Emirates as well, and the entertainment system is very good.

 

One thing - on my four flights between Manchester and Dubai, the plane was absolutely packed. I was on my own so I didn’t mind what seat I had, but I don’t know how likely you are to get seats together if you’re a couple/party and don’t pre-book them. Perhaps others could comment?
