Northern lights, in winter, not when most ships cruise. You would have to take the local Hurtigruten line that runs year round.

I haven't seen any whales on our Norway cruise. My whale sightings were by sheer luck in the South Pacific and the northern Atlantic in Newfoundland. I didn't see any other sea life in Norway, but we saw a reindeer herd near the North Cape and goats in Geiranger Fjord. You probably would see more animals if you took a cruise on a small ship with a naturalist on board.

Our ship did not a have a speaker on Vikings. And the Hansa museum in Bergen was on fishing history, very interesting by the way.

The scenery is spectacular!

Would be helpful if you put the country where you live on profile.

You could look in this forum

You probably need to go at least twice - when you can see the northern lights it is fairly dark and whilst it is pretty with the snow its not always easy to get about. In summer of course it is midnight sun - never sets.

If you want to walk on the land up the fiords and even to see them from the ship that would be the time to go for that.

There are one or two small lines doing N lights Cruise & maritime

do a couple each winter. Not been with them so you will have to research. They are on here under "other cruise lines".

Fred Olsen, Cruise and Maritime and P&O all do cruises in winter to try to see the Northern lights; some from Southampton or Tilbury, and Fred O also goes from Newcastle, which is much nearer to Norway.

Friends went with Hurtigruten early one December, and saw the lights.

Most lines go to Norway in the summer, from various UK ports

If P&O do a March Norway cruise, that could be the best. There's no Northern Lights in summer because it doesn't go dark; no sea life or fjord views in December because it doesn't get light. March is 12 hours daylight, 12 darkness.

P&O usually have two or three guest lecturers, at least one of whom you can expect to be doing something local, might well be doing Vikings.

Alternatively, if you're able to consider much more expensive cruises, try Noble Caledonia small ships. Usually 100 or so passengers but lots of guest lecturers on all the subjects you're interested in. But probably only in summer, so no Northern Lights.

The Norwegian Hurtigruten line (which are also the mail boats) cruise year round to many of the remote towns and fjords. We have cruised the Norwegian area (including North of the Arctic Circle) and have never spotted an Orca or any other whale. On the other hand, we live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico during the winter and see Humpbacks multiple times a week...from our Condo balcony :). Our favorite Norwegian Fjord is the Geiranger.

Would have sent you a msg....but we lost everyone's e-mails from that VOV cruise. Have been in Mexico for exactly 2 weeks and every day has been sunny with temps about 80 :). You might recall we said one reason we love Puerto Vallarta (over FL) is the near perfect weather. Folks here have been talking about the temperatures in Florida (pipes freezing and bursting in Tampa). You will love Norway.
