Paid gratuity but do we still tip?

You don't have to tip beyond the added gratuities....ever. If you do...that's fine....there is no suggested amount.

Even the added gratuities are not 'required'.

The only gratuities that are really difficult or impossible to remove are the gratuities that are automatically added to drinks. Usually about 18%.

If you received expected levels of service, you don't need to give any additional tips. Many people will tip additional if they feel they received better than expected service, but that is completely discretionary. We have given $20 extra at times, and sometimes none at all. It depends entirely on the individual and how well they took care of us.

Would help if we knew which cruise line you were sailing.

A few lines include room service delivery persons in the tipping pool, but many do not.

Spa personnel, casino dealers, and kid's club staff are also outside the pool, though a service charge is often automatically added to spa treatments (but not always shown on the chit, so verify this beforehand if you plan on visiting the spa).

If you are in a Suite on the lines that view the suite life as a separate "ship within a ship" it is de rigueur to proffer something additional to the butler or concierge depending on your degree of usage of their services.

As everyone else has mentioned, extra tipping is not required. That being said, I usually have breakfast delivered to my room and tip $2-3 and I have always had excellent room stewards and usually tip them ($20) and their assistant ($10) at the end of the cruise.

I would suggest you don't tip anyone other than the room service server. You daily service charge covers dining room personnel, room stewards and individuals behind the scenes who also make your cruise enjoyable. If you purchase drinks of any kind, a service charge will be added to the price of the drink. Room service personnel are not included in the daily service charges so we usually tip a couple of bucks or more if it's a large order.

Many cruisers will tip additional cash to those who offer exceptional service. In 20+ cruises we rarely see anything that we consider exceptional so don't often tip beyond the daily service charges.

Enjoy your cruise!

Not true on all cruise lines. For example, on DCL, the auto-gratuities are only given to the dining team and room hosts. No behind the scenes people involved. And the auto gratuity isn't pooled, it's a specific amount to each position.

No additional tips are required, except for room service. We usually do tip our room steward about $20pp extra on the last night, depending on quality of service and length of cruise, but that is a personal choice.

We do Anytime dining and seldom have the same servers. The only time I have tipped extra to waiters was when we had 7 grandkids ages 5-11 with us and the servers and head waiter? were so wonderful with the kids, taking all kind so extra time, extra treats, even magic tricks and puzzles to keep them busy and entertained.

Interesting to note thst P&O (UK) have just announced that from May next year, they will stop applying auto gratuities. In addition, they clearly state that no tips are required tor expected once this change has been made. It is likely that prices may increase slightly as a result, but overall an excellent decision.

If you pay the auto gratuity or service charge as it is often called, no other tips are required EVER. Please be aware that an auto gratuity (service charge) will be added to many on board purchases and I consider that part of the normal charge. A passenger NEVER has to hand out dollar bills or add amounts to bills that they sign giving tips. The VAST MAJORITY of passengers do not add anything above and beyond the automatic charges.

No, NO, NO...............

You do not need to tip

This extras culture is out of control

If someone is paid to do a contracted job and you have paid DSC, why give more !!

When you go to the doctor , do you give atip to the receptionist when booking in to say you are there? Do you tip the Doctor, for a nice diagnosis an extra $20?

Tipping thankfully has gone from the UK, not expected and rarely considered now, you pay the price upfront all in. Not a fan of modern Uber culture, but this has taught the cost quoted is what you pay, no extras hand out situations.

Still beating that dead horse? Don't you have anything of real value to share on these threads?

It is your own discretion if you wish to tip extra. it is not mandatory.

On my last cruise, i tipped $1 ever once in a while to the bartender when I would go to the same bar over and over. I would get the same drink each time. I would get a little heavier pour and several times when there were lines of people waiting, they would see me and make my drink and motion for me to pick it up . Thus, skipping the line People were wondering how I got my drink so fast.

One thing to keep in mind, the 18% auto gratuity added to each drink is split among all the bartenders. When you tip $1, it goes directly into their pocket and is not shared. The extra tip was greatly appreciated.

Is a heavier pour theft from the cruise line?

Seems unsavoury to encourage such actions

Correct. The amount of alcohol to be poured in a drink is carefully monitored by the cruise lines. If a bartender pours "heavy", he won't get as many drinks out of a bottle as he should. That will be noticed and he will be advised to stop being so generous. Continued over pouring to garner additional tips could find him on the next dock with his personal belongings and only those few tips and his last check in his pocket.

Believing a bartender is giving you extra booze because you gave him a personal tip is naive.

I didn't ask for it. They gave it to me. In the long run, they made money. I didn't have to go back and get a 2nd drink. think about not having to use a 2nd glass, cost of washing the 2nd glass, a little bit of ice and soda along with the bartenders time to make the 2nd drink.

they should be thanking me for saving them money LOL

No additional tips are required. Room service, if used, is about the only thing the pre-paid tips don't cover.

All staff, including room service staff, are included in the prepaid tips on Holland America.
