ski ninja Posted September 2, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2009 I am thinking of getting my dad Sirius radio for his birthday and was wondering if it worked while out to sea? Has anyone ever taken one with them and does it get a signal?
kitty9 Posted September 2, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2009 Don't bother. They do not work at sea once you get out of the coverage area. I've taken both Sirius and XM, when they were separate companies, and they stopped working about an hour out of Ft Lauderdale or Miami and about 1/2 hour out of Los Angeles or San Diego. Rare Keith1010 Posted September 2, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2009 Kitty is absolutely correct. Don't take them with you. They will not work once you get out to sea. Keith
ehfl Posted September 3, 2009 #4 Share Posted September 3, 2009 You can easily search on Google to see the coverage area for satellite radio. See this example http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=xm%20footprint&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi Remember the radio must have a direct line of site to the satellite, meaning it will not work inside your cabin. ski ninja Posted September 4, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted September 4, 2009 Thanks for the info and link. He has a balcony so could possibly have had direct line of site.
ehfl Posted September 4, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 4, 2009 Thanks for the info and link. He has a balcony so could possibly have had direct line of site. The satellite is in a geosynchronous orbit over the equator. It would have to be a direct line of site to the exact position of the satellite. So it may work at some times, but likely not work at others.
ski ninja Posted September 4, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted September 4, 2009 Fair enough. I guess I will have to suggest alternative music sources if he wants to have it with him.

Rare Keith1010 Posted September 5, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 5, 2009 Fair enough. I guess I will have to suggest alternative music sources if he wants to have it with him. Use an iPOD. You can put music on it and have hours of songs. It's great for the cruise and also for home. Keith
