Iggy_az Posted September 17, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2009 I just read about this and at least thought others should be aware. Here is a link to a page that shows how ATM's are being modified in Italy to get your debit/credit card number and pin number. http://www.snopes.com/fraud/atm/atmcamera.asp It show how they modify the ATM with wireless camera and card reader. Best way to stop this is to use an ATM inside the bank

Also, I always "mask" the PIN entry by placing your free hand over the typing hand. Same goes for anytime you are entering any security code or password, e.g. home security system, garage code, computer password, etc. IOW, always assume that someone is watching you enter your security codes or passwords so be diligent about masking it. 6rugrats Posted September 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2009 The sources cited for this article are dated 2004, so it seems somewhat old. I didn't see any references to Italy, just Brazil, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the US. I think I will take this off my list of worries.

CintiPam Posted September 17, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2009 Good advice, Terpnut. (Though I also do not understand why the OP decided to post this old snopes reference on the Italy port of call board in particular.)
AmoMondo Posted September 18, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 18, 2009 There was a spate on this type of crime years ago all over the place. I'm a banker and was based in a branch at the time and we had to go and check the machines several times each day for something having been fitted over the card reader. the crime has mostly died out since the advent of chip and PIN as it is not enough to clone your card now - they also need the CHIP
Andym Posted September 19, 2009 #7 Share Posted September 19, 2009 This problem is all over the world, watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOiCufYGH9I
AmoMondo Posted September 19, 2009 #8 Share Posted September 19, 2009 If your debit card has been converted to the Chip type by your bank, then you have nothing to worry about. These can not be cloned in this way, Still very wise to always shield your PIN though
gosport11 Posted September 19, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 19, 2009 If you use your card in shops etc also make sure you cover your pin number in fact treat all machines as suspect :):):)
iancal Posted September 21, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2009 As a general rule, both at home and when travelling, we always try to access an atm that is in a bank or in a retail establishment. We avoid the ones on the street...especially at night. It is just too easy for someone to come along, grab the money, and run.
