Does anyone know if there is a store where I can purchase religious items from the Vatican Museum without paying for admission to the museum or if there is another store near St. Peter's Basilica where I can shop

Yea there is a store directly to the left of St Peter' Square that we went to that sold various religious items.

We are planning our return to Rome in April, but, I remember out last trip which was 20 years ago there were lots of people selling religious items for great prices in the square. It is possible that is not allowed anymore. I remember buying Rosary beads for everyone.:) Just be careful of the pick-pockets as they are not religious.

As suggested, there are many stores near the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica. If you want "official" goods, then you can go into the Basilica and head to the right towards the Tombs and Cupola entrances - Follow the signage. As you head towards these entrances, you will see a Vatican Gift Shop on your right, just past the statue of Constantine, at the head of the COnstantine Colonade. The nuns behind the counters will "upsell" you!

There are several official Vatican stores in the colonnades on both sides of St. Peter's. All are free to enter, and they had the best selection of more standard items like rosaries, medals, and cards. The largest store was on the right (as you face the basilica); the most expensive upscale one was on the left.

However, you may also want to check out the non-official stores across the street from St. Peter's Piazza. There are several large ones, and they have a wide selection of interesting items. If you are looking for something unusual, ironic, or kitschy, they are more likely to have it.

We didn't see anyone selling religious items in the square, either trip.
