From Civitavecchia to our Rome hotel with luggage

Our cruise ends in Civitavecchia and we are staying in Rome for a few days. Any suggestions on the best way to get to our hotel that is near the Spanish steps with luggage?

There are dozens of threads on this topic in just the past several months.

 

"Best" depends on what is important to you. If money is no object, a car and driver who takes you door-to-door is best.

 

If that is cost prohibitive, there is the train. Many, many threads on how to do this. You can make it easier by taking a cab to the train and a cab from the train to the hotel.

 

Least expensive would be train to metro to the spanish steps stop. Pretty difficult unless you have minimal luggage, but cheap.

We took the train. It was easy.

 

The train is less than a 10 minute walk from the port entrance and there are free shuttle buses from the pier to to the entrance. Tne only issue was that we missed the "local" train which stopped on the track next to the station so we had to carry our bags down/up stairs to reach the middle track. Not a big deal to save at least $130. And we talked with some Italians and other travelers on the train which was fun.

 

 

 

Note: there was a man with a cart offering to take our bags for 1 Euro each which we accepted since it was very hot and we each had a suitcase and a rolling carry on.

We're in a similar predicament in trying to decide about general transportation is public transportation convenient and easy? Or is it better to just use drivers?

The train is very economical and easy......if you don't have a lot of luggage. Remember to validate your ticket in the little yellow machines before you get on the train. Also, the train doors open and close quickly, so be ready to get on and off quickly. Also, ask if you aren't sure about which track is the correct one.

With the train, it is a fair chance you also must be totally self sufficient with handling your own bags, you are likely going to have to go up and down stairs, and many times the arriving track is a LONG walk in Termini station.

 

The Spainish Steps, could also involve the Metro, more stairs possible. BUT the bargain of Rome for transportation. I have no problem with public transportation and do it all the time. But a LOT of people can't/won't.

If you have more than one bag each, another choice is to take a transfer like Rome Cabs. You can go to your Meet and Mingle group and see if someone would like to share a ride/the cost.

We just returned from our Med. cruise which ended in Civitavecchia. We were also staying a few extra days in Rome. We booked a private tour in Rome that ended at our hotel, since we needed a transfer anyway we decided that was the way to go, we had used them for several other ports as well. If saving money is not that much of an issue, I would recommend it.

Cruise and Ferry passengers can catch a shuttle to the entrance of the port and walk 4 blocks to the train station.
