Been There, Planning That Posted November 25, 2009 #1 Share Posted November 25, 2009 We're considering a gold panning expedition in one of our ports of call. There will be four young granddaughters along and I'd like to have advance estimates of the cost of offering to have their gold put in one of those clear lockets. Thanks for helping us budget. wolfie11 Posted November 25, 2009 #2 Share Posted November 25, 2009 The cheaper ones run around $10-15, or at least they were a couple of years ago. They may have gone up as the price of gold has risen considerably.
Been There, Planning That Posted November 25, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted November 25, 2009 Thanks Wolfie, I'd feared hundreds so even with inflaction I think we'll be able to spring for a few lockets. If the adults contributed their panned gold to a child there might even be enough to see.
Tricia724 Posted November 25, 2009 #4 Share Posted November 25, 2009 I have one of those lockets myself from our trip in 2005. The two of us did gold panning at two separate locations, and my locket contains the sum total of those two adventures and is 1/2-2/3 full. I did, however, buy a 14k gold bezel and paid $50 for it at that time. If your girls are very young, I can see that a gold plated bezel might be a better option. Funny thing.....I wear that locket a lot. Sometimes it's just the right size when I want a little something around my neck, and it's a good conversation piece. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with them panning their gold.

Been There, Planning That Posted November 26, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted November 26, 2009 Thanks to your responses I now have a price range from which I can plan. I of course, would like to think the young girls would treasure these forever, but I fear not, so cheaper will be better. We'll focus on the experience. NHsnowpup Posted December 1, 2009 #7 Share Posted December 1, 2009 Budget conscious and fun idea for young girls. Find some of the bubble blowers that you get as favors for weddings. The pretty clear ones with an eyelet for a ribbon necklace. Blow bubbles to celebrate your departure and then clean out and use for your gold flakes. Very inexpensive and girls love bubbles. Been There, Planning That Posted December 1, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted December 1, 2009 How Creative! I never thought of bubbles for sailaway either. I'd rather hoped that the gold filings would be a souvenir of the trip; the idea to combine the adults' filings with those of the children so that there would be a few visible flakes. But if the lockets available are over budget, your suggestion will be used. Thanks
