Swimming pool question

I could probably search and find this out but I am too lazy. I have been on 4 HAL cruises but have never gone in a swimming pool. I am not a pool person nor is my wife so I never wondered about this.

 

Is the water in the pool fresh water or salt water or salt water that was converted to fresh water? Is it heated?

 

The reason I ask is I am taking,,,ready for this,,a Carnival cruise. I won't go into detail by the main three reasons are price, port (It's 20 minutes from my house) and I am introducing a friend to cruise life (this is only a 4 nighter). My friend and his wife will want to be in the pool on sea day and on CCL ships it's salt water that is not heated, heated but the sun. So I was curious about HAL.

:) I spend a lot of time in the pools and know that the lido pool on all HAL ships is fresh water and heated (water was probably desalinated) The aft pool on most ships is salt water usually not heated but I believe that they can be heated. I took a Northern Europe cruise on the Rotterdam a few years ago and we swam in the heated aft pool as we crossed the Arctic Circle. I understand that as the pools get refurbished they may switch to fresh water in the aft pools also because the salt water causes quite a bit of deterioration to the pool's plumbing systems

The pools aren't very deep, so if it's warm, and the sun's out, it will "heat" up quickly...sometimes, getting a bit TOO warm to 'cool' off!

from past experience, Carnival often drains their pools at night & refills them early in the morning with fresh sea water. and, just as another cc'er mentioned, the water heats up fast since the pools aren't that deep.
