MemphisShamrock Posted January 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2010 As a cruise ritual, my husband, Rick, and I like to take school, teaching and/or hygiene supplies to a needy local organization. We have visited schools in Guatemala and Belize. In Guatemala, the "Go with Gus" tour organized the school visit. In Belize, I worked with the Jesuits in the U.S. who connected me with an American priest and his assistant there. I have to admit that while I totally love cruising, I sometimes feel guilty for enjoying the lavishness and pampering...especially when seeing the slums that often appear at our ports of call. Providing even small items like pencils, erasers, mouthwash greatly helps the locals! And if you drive to your "origin" port, then you won't have to worry about size or weight limitations set by the airlines. I just filled a small suitcase on wheels and stuck it under my bed 'til we reached our port. Then I left the suitcase filled with goodies for the school. It's a great way to help share our blessings.
