Amazon ports of call

Who can give us info about the various ports of call (Veendam) and if we really truly need to take a tour or could do it on our own.....such as in Salvador, Maceio, Recife, etc., etc.

I suspect he answer is yes an excursion is recommended, but since I'm on the same cruise for the first time I guess we will find out!
