Momma Mojito Posted March 24, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 24, 2010 We will be in Anchorage from Wednesday night until Saturday morning when we lease on the train for Whittier, was wondering if we should rent a car while we are there. Or should we just use what is offered......buses taxies and shuttles to see the sites. Will we miss anything if we don't rent a car? Glaciers Posted March 24, 2010 #2 Share Posted March 24, 2010 Anchorage itself is pretty small and you can walk most of downtown with no problems if you don’t have mobility issues. You can also get to the Alaska Native Heritage Center by shuttle from downtown. I would rent a car to explore outside of Anchorage. Although the train will take you along Turnagain Arm to Whittier, it is worth it to also drive that direction. There are frequent sheep sightings as well as occasional Beluga Whales and the rare bore tide. You can also head north towards Hatcher Pass for a day trip out of Anchorage. Matanuska Glacier is about 2 hours away and worth the trip if you want to do some guided glacier trekking.
