marlin1518 Posted March 27, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2010 I have just had a medical device placed into me and I am taking a cruise on Carnival in July. When do you inform security, prior to or after you go through the screening process ?? I know this is really a petty question, but I don't want to get in trouble for not letting them know at the "proper" time. Thanks for any assistance with this question. You can tell them during the security check in. It's really not going to be an issue. You'll be fine... go... have a wonderful time... :)

cb at sea Posted March 28, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 28, 2010 Hubby has a pacemaker, so he can't go thru anything with a magnet....he just tells them PRIOR to going thru security....on the ship, it's not as big of a deal as it will be on an airplane....for flights, it's a HUGE Pain in the Ass! Truly!
marlin1518 Posted March 28, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted March 28, 2010 Well this will be the first time on a trip with this and luckily I do not have to fly !! Just getting onto the ship !!

Truly! DD21 has a VNS to help control seizures. (it is like a pacemaker for the brain) We tell them prior to going thru. No problems so far. And I agree - the airport is a huge pain in the butt - have to wait for a female security officer to pat her down each time. Also - just be aware - don't go too close to amplifiers (in disco, etc.) as they can also affect medical devices!
doe326 Posted March 28, 2010 #9 Share Posted March 28, 2010 I've had a knee replacement and not once have I gone through Carnival security and the alarm sounded. Their scanner apparently isn't set as high as those at the airports.
Majesty Fan Posted March 28, 2010 #10 Share Posted March 28, 2010 Most medical devices such as a Pace aker or a Spinal Cord Stimulator or even a pain pump or baclofen pump should not go through magnets. You can usally get a card from Medtronic that states you have such device and will be wanded through. The pins and plates do not go off. I have over 14 screws. But my Spinal Stim did and I had a card. Lexi

We travel with a guy who has pacemaker and defib--- he just tells them he has them and is escorted around to a individual security person. It is pretty normal for them, go and have fun
browneyedwoman Posted March 28, 2010 #12 Share Posted March 28, 2010 Thank you for posting this. My Dad has a pacemaker and I didn't think about his safety walking through the screening devices. I don't want anything to happen to the pacemaker while on board. We'll notify them and ask what he needs to do.

Their scanner apparently isn't set as high as those at the airports. I think that's interesting as my knee replacement sets off every single alarm everywhere including going on to the ships. I get hand wanded every time.
arush5268d Posted March 28, 2010 #14 Share Posted March 28, 2010 You won't have an issue at all. Depending on what the device is that you speak of, you may have a special ID card to signify that you have an implanted medical device.
kyrisong1 Posted March 28, 2010 #15 Share Posted March 28, 2010 I have a cochlear implant and the only place I've had difficulty was the Atl airport. I have dear friends there and I had a few hours layover so I went out of the secure area, omg coming back in was awful. I was wearing my belt processor instead of the one that attaches by magnet to my head, because at the time I could hear better with it. They took my processor off, leaving me almost completely deaf AND took my carryon bag that had my dad in it (my sister and I were doing an at sea burial on the Glory) and also had 1000.00 in cash. They put it on a low shelf where I could not see it where the guy was going through it while sitting. I was extremely upset and the "supervisor" was a jerk to me, kept laughing about it. I carry a card that states I have the implant and if anyone cared to look at my head they could see that. I was btw traveling alone, meeting my sister in Orlando. Long story short it was horrible and I will never to this day go through the security gate at Atlanta. And hindsight I should have reported him to HIS supervisor for being such a mean jerk, but I didn't. So I'm sure he's still terrorizing passengers in his little "domain" I've been through security on ships from Carnival and Celebrity, never even had a question about it. Cheers, Carole
evandbob Posted March 28, 2010 #16 Share Posted March 28, 2010 I have had spinal fusion and a hip replacement and get hand wanded and patted down every time I walk through a metal detector at embarkation for a cruise or a flight. The one time I went through a full body scan at MIA was the quickest.
marlin1518 Posted March 28, 2010 Author #17 Share Posted March 28, 2010 Thank you all for all of your replies !! So sad to hear that kyrisong1, no one needs to have people treat anybody like that .. arush5268d yes I just recieved my card in the mail, I just was wondering when to notify them of the implant, and hand them my card. As for my implant would it even set off the detectors ?? It is a titanium injection port located in the upper part of my stomach. It may or may not set off the detectors but I'd rather be safe then sorry !!!
misguidedangel Posted March 28, 2010 #18 Share Posted March 28, 2010 The airport security scanners must be set extrememly high. My small hairclip ALWAYS sets the alarm off. It isn't a bomb or nothing but nooooo, they always have to scan the damn thing in case it is....a hair clip...... Medical devises--pacemakers--tell the security and you'll be just fine! Their scanner apparently isn't set as high as those at the airports. Now I on the other hand have set off the alarms on the ships scanners, even when I only had one knee replaced...I've now had two knees replaced so I definitely set off the alarms..I usually just tell the guard as I'm walking thru that I am going to set off the alarms and that I have titanium knees they then will wand me and send me on my way...no big deal...once the full body scan machines go into our airport I hope I will see less delays, given the fact that they will be able to actually see them.. You'll be fine and honestly most ship personnel and the TSA agents know about joint replacement and it will be no big deal..Have fun on your cruise... MEOWSMURPHY Posted March 28, 2010 #20 Share Posted March 28, 2010 One other thing of note is that after I had my first knee replacement I received my card stating my name and date and a picture of the implant. The first time flying after the surgery I tried to hand my card to the TSA to show why I set the alarm off...they told me that the card meant nothing as it could be "forged" so..so much for the card..now I don't even bother..it I fly during the summer they can see the scars on my knees and it seems as though the wanding isn't as in depth as it is in the winter when I have on my jeans...just my observation..no big deal..wand me and send me on my way..:D

detwings Posted March 28, 2010 #22 Share Posted March 28, 2010 My mother in law had an ICD device implanted (pacemaker and defib Medtronic) and we had the doctor write a letter she carried with her stating this device was implanted, the date and kind and that she was not to go thru magnetic screening. She also had the Medtronic ID card and that is what we used to show upon boarding at the airports and /or cruise piers. They wheeled her aside and did the checking and everything was fine. You should be fine and enjoy
jordanaire Posted March 28, 2010 #23 Share Posted March 28, 2010 WOW! I never even gave this any thought since I had my spinal cord stimulator implanted on Feb 2nd! At least, now, I know I won't have any problems getting through security (yes, I have my Medtronic card)! :cool:Bill
pe4all Posted March 28, 2010 #24 Share Posted March 28, 2010 DD21 wears her medic alert necklace, carries her VNS card stating she has a pulse generator surgically implanted in her chest, and we carry 2 letters - one from her neurologist, one from her neurosurgeon stating she cannot go thru the metal detectors. Have had no problems yet.
