zachnlucy Posted June 29, 2005 #1126 Share Posted June 29, 2005 I will try to post on my very first cruise on the SUN! Counting down the days -- I am very excited -- I don't know what to expect -- I have been reading all the posts and reviews on the Alaska threads -- Hope it is wonderful as people say. Life is good!:D Hey Never ... When is your cruise in August? We're August 29 and have a roll call thread that's just beginning to gather steam. Edited to add: Oops, I just saw your clock. You're at the very beginning of August. I'm now jealous. :)
zachnlucy Posted June 29, 2005 #1127 Share Posted June 29, 2005 On our last cruise (RCI), we had beds that were very low to the ground and I don't remember that from previous cruises on CCL and NCL. It was one of the first things I noticed when I walked into the room (a junior suite). It certainly wasn't a big deal, but since I'm now in full obsession mode for the upcoming cruise, I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little something about the beds on the Sun? :o We're in a regular balcony cabin on Aloha. The beds are two twins pushed together to form a queen. They are high enough to hide substantial luggage bags underneath - we've never had a problem. All the mattresses we've been on are hard and the mattresses tend to separate or spread apart if you're not careful. I really recommend that the first thing you do is get your cabin steward to place an eggcrate mattress on the bed. He or she will do that before turn down on the first night. It makes a world of difference and it will help keep the mattresses together. The pillows are small and flat, so use the extras from the closet if you want more. Life is good!:D NTL, I was beginning to think no one else was cruising on the Sun! You should be able to gather some great info from this thread both past & present.I await your full "live' report.;) zachnlucy, I don't remember the beds being especially low...at least about the same as when we sailed with RCL.There is plenty of room underneath for your luggage. Don't forget to ask for an egg-crate topper for your bed and the nicer feather pillows.I've always slipped my room steward a $20 upon arrival and I always got the "special" treatment.
zachnlucy Posted June 29, 2005 #1130 Share Posted June 29, 2005 Don't forget to ask for an egg-crate topper for your bed and the nicer feather pillows. We usually do the $20 upfront also and add extra along the way depending on the service. Yep, I do plan on asking for the eggcrate as soon as we're in. Soooooooooooo, they have some hidden feather pillows, huh? Thanks. :D

I tried explaining this to my room steward who took about 15 minutes to understand and then she finally said she would take care of it. Next thing I know, there were 2 maintenance people taking my bed away and moving a queen size bed into my room. That part made me happy. The negative part was that even though I faxed a request in for an egg crate mattress - I could never explain this to my room steward, thus, I never got it. I reallly wish I would have had one. cruiserforlife Posted June 30, 2005 Author #1132 Share Posted June 30, 2005 zachnlucy, Yes,it's not just an urban myth that those pillows exists...the regular ones are like wafers! I'm willing to bet it was because of my $20 I was quickly offered the "nicer" pillows when I complained about them. Coral, I think it's been brought up before that not all of the stewards know what the term "eggcrate" means.I'm sure you did your best to explain what you were looking for but sometimes they just don't understand. I know - I tried to say "bumpy mattress pad" - she brought a mattress pad but it was a regular one...... I had hoped she would ask her supervisor but she didn't. jplewis Posted June 30, 2005 #1134 Share Posted June 30, 2005 Another egg-crate mattress question - do they come in twin sizes or just queen?
cruiserforlife Posted June 30, 2005 Author #1135 Share Posted June 30, 2005 Another egg-crate mattress question - do they come in twin sizes or just queen? Not certain but as ccrain mentioned, the queen size helps to hold the two twin beds together. I would guess they have both though...
Tess2mommies Posted July 2, 2005 #1136 Share Posted July 2, 2005 Hi everyone! Eventually, I will make it through reading all 46 pages of this thread. In the mean time, are there safes in the room on this ship? I'll be in a balcony (not sure if it varies by room) on the caribe deck and I really need a safe. KAJOKG Posted July 4, 2005 #1139 Share Posted July 4, 2005 I always request an eggcrate mattress pad from Ship Board Services in writing before the cruise. Their offices are in California and any Princess agent will give you the address. The pads are on the bed when we board. And, yes, they have them for Queen and Twin. AuntB Posted July 6, 2005 #1143 Share Posted July 6, 2005 Can someone tell me how passengers are doing in the casino and if the slot machines look new? When the Sun went into drydock for rehab, did they put on new casino equipment? Just return from a wonderful 7 days on the Sun Princess, we departed Whittier, Alaska June 27. The slots were very lose on the first day and then after that not good at all, but we still had a good time. They had a few that were not working, but there was usually enough for everyone. I don't know if they were new but they looked ok to me. The Sun Princess is a beautiful ship, this was our first cruise and we can't wait until we go on our second, Panama Canal February 2006. Sorry I didn't write from the Sun Princess, but I just didn't have time, too many things to do and not enough hours in the day.

I can understand about not having enough time, especially on your first cruise...time just flies by and before you know it,it's over.:( How was the food and entertainment in your estimation? You will love the PC cruise...we did and it's something everyone should do at least once. The food was great, the Horizon Court was ok, but you expect that, it's buffet food, Ww ate there almost every morning for breakfast and one day for lunch. Had dinner in the dining room every night but one, when we had pizza. We were pleased with the food, the crew was wonderful, they couldn't do enough for us, can't wait to go back and get pampered again. I've been following this thread since you started it back in January. Thanks for all the information you gave on the Sun, it really helped us on our first cruise. AuntB, Glad that you were able to gain knowledge from this thread and that it helped you in preparing for your cruise.I wish something like it was in place before I cruised on the Sun. Yes,cruising is the life and I don't think one ever forgets the "dreamy" experience of being pampered on your first cruise. The only thing that rates a close second to actually cruising is the anticipation and planning of your next one.;) You will now kow what to expect for your PC cruise which I'm guessing is between 10-15 days. What is the length of this cruise and on what ship? T_Bird, Sorry for the double post response to your question...these message boards can sometimes go haywire! The pools on the Sun (and all other Princess ships I've sailed)are all fresh-water and generally there is at least one pool open 24/7 and most all of the hot tubs are open 24/7 as well. One can usually find a nice hot tub towards the rear of the ship late at night all to one's self. I SO much prefer fresh-water over the saltwater ones on RCL which I never really got used to.
