2 days docked in BA

We're thinking of doing BA to Valpariso on the Celeb Infinity. On the itinerary it says day 1 and day 2 are docked in BA. Does it work like this..day 1 , check in etc by, say, 2pm and you can go off and do your own thing. Day 2, docked (like in any other port of call) and set sail at 7pm. If so, is there any real need to stay in a hotel in BA prior, or could we just use the ship as a hotel and have 1 1/2 days sightseeing? Any pros or cons doing it either way? Presumably if there was a problem with your flight, you would still have 24 hrs to play with to get on the ship?

That would be the assumption, but best to check with the cruise line. But if you are late you can always get to the next port and meet the ship. Hmmm, next port is BA. :) But have you been to Iguazu Falls? Perhaps a day early and the quick flight to the falls would be of interest as well as touring BA. My information says that the falls could well be the highlight that makes a really great vacation/tour.

If you can at all swing it, plan on extra days in Buenos Aires, if not to have time to see Iguazu Falls (which can be done as an overnight trip) then at least to have some time to enjoy Buenos Aires. You might not get back that way again and there is much to see in Buenos Aires. We added 6 nights and it still wasn't enough time.

We sailed Celebrity Infinity on back to back cruises in March 2010 beginning in Buenos Aires. (to Valparaiso) On day one, we checked in at the ship from approximately 1:00-2:00 p.m. (I suspect we could have been there earlier) We were tired and just stayed on board that night. The following day, the ship was still in same port and we took a wonderful tour for the day. It was great! We highly recommend the ship, the cruise, and being in BA for two days!

You have this right. You can come and go as you please whenever there is an overnight.

I stil would highly recommend getting there at least one day before your cruise? It gives you time to get over the jet lag, to not worry about being impacted by flight delays and cancellations (I realize that you don't leave until the next day) and there is just so much to see in this city.

What with the ash problems that look like they are going to drag on etc and the fact that we would come in early too, we should OK. Will probably come in 2 or 3 days early.

That's what we would do. The port is a taxi ride away from the popular attractions and restaurants. Be forewarned the taxis from the port are ripoffs. For our SA/Antarctica Cruise we arrived three days early and toured a lot. You could do a full tour of BA (two half day tours) and a tango show the first night.

You can even do Igusau Falls in one long day as we did. You fly early in the morning from the downtown airport, arrange a private guide to pick you up and tour the park and return you to the airport for a night flight back to BA. You can see most of the park and it's a great experience. Lan and Aeroargentina fly there and can be booked on line.
