17 years and 345 days old: Allowed in the club and R shows?

We're cruising on the Carnival Dream in a few weeks with my teenage sister-in-law and she turns 18 two weeks after we sail. Will she have a problem getting into the disco or going to the R rated comedy shows? She looks and acts older and shouldn't really stand out. Has anyone cruised on Carnival recently that saw them strictly enforcing the 18 age rule?

It could vary depending on the ship you are going on, & the staff. I know from personal experience.. when I was 16 and on the Elation in 2007, I had no problems seeing the R Rated Comedy shows.

But I have read some comments on here & Carnival's forum that sometimes they DO check for ID to verify age.

The R rated comedy show probably not an issue not sure about the comedy club on the Dream though.

The Disco and such will most likely be a no go. Our daughter turned 18 on a cruise and for the first 3 days she couldn't go in the casino or clubs but on her birthday and after no issue.

I saw it very strickly enforced last year for the clubs - DS's friend turned 18 the day we got home from the cruise and he was not allowed into the clubs after 10pm (I think the time is correct). Rated-R comedy was not a problem (they didn't card for that). This was on the Destiny.

There are no age restrictions at the bars, she just won't be able to oder liqour which isn't until 21.

The shows are recommended for adults but again there isn't anyone checking id's.

She won't be able to gamble or even be in the casino if they are watching very close. If she were to put her S&S card in a machine it would automatically alert them to her age.

She will still be young enough to be in the Club O2 group which I think is for 15 to 17yo's and I would encourage her to go and meet some other teens and see what all they participate in.

I just saw another post that indicated a curfew for the clubs and I had forgotten that, but I agree I think it's 10pm. But there will be special late night activities through Club O2 for her to participate in. I do know that they are VERY strict about those age limits and don't allow anyone over 17 to be in there.

In my experience they are very strict in the clubs at enforcing the age limits. The shows are another story. That is pretty much a parental responsibility. I did see a comedian call out an obviously under age child sitting with her parents (?) and they were ask to remove her from the area on one cruise. They did, muttering whole way out the door.

The shows are usually so crowded and the venue fills so quick that virtually no one that is even close in appearance is screened.

The disco and clubs are usually carded right at the door.

You might have a different experience, who knows?

It seems as though Carnival has been getting more active in controlling the doors to the dance club. There are security members at each entrance and they check id. A few years back I would say she would probably be able to get in....now, probably not.

Nobody checks id at the shows. At least I've never seen anyone checking. She should be fine going to those.

My experience was like most of the others. On Inspiration they had a "bouncer" outside the disco.

For the R-rated comedy show, it is almost impossible to card. Usually, this is a large public lounge that is used for other things right up until the comedy. On my last Inspiration cruise, it was used for karaoke before the comedy started. So no reasonable way to card people. What you will probably find is the assistant cruise director (or whoever is hosting the show) will make repeated announcements about the nature of the show and that "no one under 18" should be in attendance.

On some lines, they put a sticker on your card, or issues one in a different colour so they know which is children and which is adult. Usually, when on date of sailing is what the age is. If they have a birthday half way through, they are considered the younger date and not the older date.

i was 19 when i went into the club the first time on the ship but i never got IDed. drank and everything (even though some people in other threads refuse to believe me ha).. not a big deal. anyway just sharing my experience. this was on the Holiday so maybe its different on different ships

I don't think any ship IDs for the shows - this is up to the parent's discretion. However, the clubs are different. Any one we have gone into have IDd and have not allowed in even if within a day or two of turning 18 - they have drawn the line and it was set in stone. Some say that they have gotten in but so far I have not seen that.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like my SIL will hate this cruise. She definitely doesn't want to hang out with the 15-17 year olds.

Why wouldn't she want to hangout with people her age? My 17 year old has a blast on a cruise and makes lots of friends all ages. Is she unsociable or stuckup?

I wouldn't go as far as saying stuck up as I don't know her - but I agree with you about why she would not want to hang with people her own age. Just because it is 15-17 doesn't mean she has to spend all her time with 15s. If you are going to say that she is a very mature 17 year old, the others may well be just as mature. She may find she has a blast - no point in pre judging the cruise based on this.

while it's nice to hear ur 17 y.o. enjoys the clubs, it's not every kids idea of nirvanna...even well-adjusted ones:rolleyes:with active social lives on dry land. it's an option, not a mandate.

many older teens are experienced travelers (including lots of time in the kids/teen clubs). FYI, the teen clubs can be very sparsely attended, especially if during school calendar = a bit of a snooze.

imo nothing wrong with a nearly-18 yo teen electing to spend time on their own exploring the ship or (gasp!) spending time with parental units enjoying a show:confused:.

When I was a teenager, you wouldn't have caught me dead in Club O2. It had nothing to do with not liking people my age (though admittedly, most of my friends were much older) and everything to do with NOT being a fan of hanging out in clubs. I still don't enjoy them. I'd have probably not had any real social activity onboard as a teen, unless I'd happened to meet someone on the very first day when I'd have given a try to the teens activities. I'd have still had a good time, I'd have just needed a laptop full of books. I can see teenager-me making it through twenty five or thirty books on a cruise =P

What i meant by being stuckup is she is going to be 18....why can't she hang out with or meet 17 year olds???? Thats what i meant by stuckup. I am 52 years old and can enjoy the company of any aged individuals. Thats all i meant no harm in my statement....i didn't mean she had to go to any clubs. Read over the OP's post you'll see what i mean.By the way my 17 year old does not like the clubs!!!!!!

The teen clubs can be a little lame. I've heard this from a lot of people. When I walked by them on the cruises that I've been on, they were pretty dead. Especially if the 17 year old wants to dance, not play video games.

Cruised Carnival Freedom last September. They were carding people at the disco on several nights. I had to go back to my room and get my id and I am well past 18.

I really think it depends on the ship. We were on the Destiny in March and my son brought 5 of his friends; 3 of which were under 21 (20 to be exact) and they had no problem drinking every night in the disco. Yes there was a bouncer at the door and they were asked their ages the first night and allowed to proceed. However, I do think this is the exception rather than the rule. Most other CCL ships that I have been on have been strict about enforcing the age requirements at the nightclubs and bars.
