jolly_cruiser Posted July 13, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2010 I am considering Cruise insurance for my cruise in December through TravelEx. I wanted to get any feedback about experiences with them - both good and bad and how they compare with other insurers like TravelGuard etc.
Rare Keith1010 Posted July 14, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 14, 2010 We have been very pleased with them. We like the fact that they act as the primary provider and we had some medical claims that were processed efficiently for us. Keith
irwinler Posted August 1, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 1, 2010 We were unable to get to the ship in Santiago, Chile, due to the bad earthquake that struck the day before our departure. The airport was closed. We tried to get to alternate ports, but the cost was prohibitive. At first TravelEx denied our claims (there were 3 couples). It took 4 1/2 months, but they finally agreed to pay our claims. It was quite a hassle but we finally connected with a company rep. in our state who agreed we should be paid and he went to bat for us (also the TA was fighting for us). May look carefully at other providers next time. NMI
rebel9040 Posted August 1, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 1, 2010 Is there any advantage in obtaining 1 trip insurance policy to cover 8 family members travelling together, as opposed to each couple buying their own policy ? Costs are the same for each individual.
deckguy Posted August 23, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 23, 2010 We're currently having a similar experience to Irwinler using Travelex. We've filed a claim since weather delayed our flight into Chicago in late June when they were having 80 mph winds that caused the cancellation of 375 flights that day. It's been 5 weeks and though we've made several contacts and provided additional info, the claim has not been settled yet. Very frustrating. cruiseco Posted August 24, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 24, 2010 Is there any advantage in obtaining 1 trip insurance policy to cover 8 family members travelling together, as opposed to each couple buying their own policy ? Costs are the same for each individual. The only possible cost advantage is the $8 per policy admin fee they charge. If everyone's on the same policy you only pay the $8 once. Multiple policies, multiple fees. But if the family members come from different states or are traveling on different dates you really should use separate policies. Mikensusanl Posted September 6, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 6, 2010 I was wondering about travel insurance too. How do you determine which company is best for your circumstance?
Host Caroline Posted September 7, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 7, 2010 There's a lot of very useful information on various companies here on this board from very knowledgeable members! You can go to insuremytrip.com and do a comparison of coverage, costs etc. Considerations include where you are going, pre-existing conditions anyone in your party may have (you have to purchase ins. within certain period after trip deposit in most cases), etc. IMHO only, one of the most important things to look for is the "medical evacuation" provision. Even though you have health coverage that covers you outside the States, it probably won't cover the cost of medivac back to the U.S. or nearest medical center and that is a huge expense! Gambling that you won't need that is something we aren't willing to do.....
