Pearl64 Posted July 24, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 24, 2010 I am trying to figure out where one can purchase postage stamps in the various Baltic countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Russia to be exact. My father is an avid stamp collector and would appreciate especially commemorative stamps (those with famous people or events--not just regular stamps). I know in some countries that the "post office" is not what we know in the US but part of a pharmacy or other store. Another post detailed about sending postcards from the various countries--that too, is an idea. Perhaps I will try to do both. So if anyone, can tell me where I can easily buy stamps I would appreciate it. Thanks CC. Pearl
Bet & Peg Posted July 24, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 24, 2010 We just got back from a Baltic Cruise (July 3rd on Celebrity's Constellation). In Warnemunde & Stockholm we sent post cards and bought the stanps at the same gift shop as the cards. The only other country I can speak of is Russia, St. Petersburg. Our guide took us to the main post office to buy postcard stamps and there were displays of stamps and I'm sure a window to purchase stamps. If you're taking a private tour I'd inquire from your tour company beforehand about purchasing stamps.
kaisatsu Posted July 24, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 24, 2010 I bought stamps for a postcard in Tallinn, Estonia on our last cruise. I just visited the post office right behind the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, since we were right there to see the church anyway. You can find some information in English and images of some of the stamp issues on the Estonian post website: http://www.post.ee/?lang=en In Norway, it's possible to buy stamps at post offices as well as at various "Post in Stores" centers. You can find locations on the Posten website, but the map search is only in Norwegian: http://kart.posten.no/

north-bound Posted July 25, 2010 #5 Share Posted July 25, 2010 In Stockholm I guess you will be spending some time in Gamla Stan. There you will find the Post Museum in Lilla Nygatan 6. They have a museum shop that among other things will have a good variety of stamps that are still valid and sold at the normal price. If you buy stamps in the places that sell postcards there will be a very limited variety to choose from. Zaone Posted July 26, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 26, 2010 In Riga I know at least one place, where you can buy special stamps - "Sakta" Post office. Address: Brivibas bulvaris 32 (corner of Brivibas and Kalpaka): http://www.vietas.lv/objekts/pasta_centrs_sakta/ It is very close to the Old Town - only one block behind the Monument of Freedom. I am not sure if they are good in English there, but you can check available stamps in front, write down the titles of them and then just hand the list to the sales person. You can see Latvian stamps here: http://www2.pasts.lv/lv/privatpersonas/filatelija/ According to your preferences I suggest these: http://www2.pasts.lv/en/veikals/prece/?shop_id=2124 http://www2.pasts.lv/en/veikals/prece/?shop_id=1855 http://www2.pasts.lv/en/veikals/prece/?shop_id=1856 http://www2.pasts.lv/en/veikals/prece/?shop_id=1934 http://www2.pasts.lv/en/veikals/prece/?shop_id=1490 http://www2.pasts.lv/en/veikals/prece/?shop_id=1258 There is also many FDC available. Good luck! :)
Pearl64 Posted July 26, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted July 26, 2010 Thanks everyone. The Latvian link(thanks Zaone) looks wonderful as does the postal museum in Stockholm(thanks north-bound). Thanks, kaisatsu and Ultima Thule, as well. FotoPeg, I will ask our guide about the stamps ahead of our arrival. I will make notes on the various ports so as not to waste time. Again, thank you.
