Jeff in Torrance Posted July 30, 2010 #26 Share Posted July 30, 2010 We never stay near the dock; and, never take the ship's excursions. Much more fun to just explore on our own. Last trip we took the local bus from Cabo to San Jose del Cabo for lunch, visited some art galleries, then back on the bus with the local people. Bus cost was about $2US each way. I think it's about 15 miles each way. The scariest thing is the bus ride in PV from the dock area into the old city plaza area. Those drivers are loco. But, a very cheap ride. We love Mazatlan because it's a real city. You can walk to the brewery for the free tour, or walk to the old town area for good jewelry bargains, cheap cerveza, nice pastry and coffee, great art museum, etc.
WWm Posted July 31, 2010 #27 Share Posted July 31, 2010 A friend got back from Cabo in May and said there were places they couldn't go and were escorted by armed men:confused: around town. Not only do we have a cruise coming up, but we have a timeshare in Cabo. We have NEVER had problems with safety there. Has anyone been recently? :o I have no information about Cabo other then some of the cartel vacations there and may own property. IN the past Cabo has been very safe for tourists but today in Mexico there is a war and you need to be very careful. Stay in groups, no side streets and be extra careful at night and never be in an isolated area. Now here is verified info on Puerta Villarta. In two separate incidents persons were kidnapped off the beach and held for ransom. One was jogging alone in early morning and I have no info on the other. Both were staying in hotels and it is only my personal belief that someone in the hotel IDed them for kisdnappers because the ransom was sizeable. Both were delievered back to safety after a long period of time one was short an ear and one lost a finger .. again don't be in isloated areas and be aware there's an internal war going on between cartels, between cartels and police , between police and police and lastly the federal police against everyone.. the Feds arrested over 500 police officers in Cancun a very touristy area... I would like the source of your so called "war" in Cabo. Most of the drug and crime warnings are for the border areas. The nearest border to Cabo is 1000 miles away! As I said above, I spend a month every year in Cabo and have lots of American friends who live there full time. Of course you should be careful, just like any city in the US or anywhere else in the world. But I will stand by my post that your own home town probably has way, way more crime than Cabo does. I know mine does.

Mexico City is the kidnap capital of the W O R L D ... averaging over 12 kidnappings a week. Over 500 police officers arrested by the Federal police and military drug units in Cancun. Maybe slowly re read what I wrote I never said a war in Cabo it's a war ALL over Mexico with lots of incidents along the border but also internally. Maybe you need to check the news from yesterday where the number 2 guy in the cartel and several police were killed in a major police raid and shootout in Quadalajara...so yes theres a war and with over 700 killed so far just this year all over Mexico that's more then in Afgan or Iraq .. you just need to be careful and be informed ...and no my home town is safer then Cabo ... and that's all I have to say .. I didn't come in here to argue with you but to share information and for people to be cautious...no need to be defensive and oh yes some of my information comes from a sec. company I am working for which runs details in Mexico for diplomatic protection for U S Govt...the rest is on the news daily .. have a great day .. Mind making a link to that verified source about the kidnappings?? I have never heard of this happening at all....just curious to read more about it. This is not the PV I vist at least 2-3 times a year.
AZ Karaoke Girl Posted August 3, 2010 #31 Share Posted August 3, 2010 The drug wars are in border towns mostly and there isn't any that I've heard in the resort areas like Cabo, PV etc. I've read single instances that were more by banditos vs drug cartel that are just robbing tourists but you get that anywhere and if you stay with a larger more reputable tour you should be fine. However, I generally stick close to the ship and in numbers for safety cuz I am in a foreign country where I'm an American that has no rights there so just common sense. causeyoutdoor Posted August 3, 2010 #32 Share Posted August 3, 2010 We were in Cabo on Friday and there were no issues. Only saw a few solders around the port area which is normal. Had a great time and will be going back soon.
jasmith52 Posted August 3, 2010 #33 Share Posted August 3, 2010 Well there was a report on TA (Trip Advisor) that a man was stabbed in Cabo, he is listed in crititcal condition had to be medivac to San Diego. This is a hot topic on Trip Advisor. So if you want further information I suggest you go there to find out more information (the forum section). To all that say Cabo is safe, it may be, but like in all places in the world, keep your wits about you when visiting foreign countries. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g152515-i84-k3799452-o30-American_Tourists_Attacked_Stabbed_in_Cabo_Be_Careful-Cabo_San_Lucas_Los_Cabos_Baja_California.html

Not only do we have a cruise coming up, but we have a timeshare in Cabo. We have NEVER had problems with safety there. Has anyone been recently? :o I was there last week and noticed no army presence in Cabo. I did see a truck load of army men w/ guns pass by in PV... (on route going Zip Lining) it was an eye opener but not a threat of any sort. There were 2 army guys standing near cruise landing area, just a presence. I saw no police anywhere, just army. It didn't bother me in the slightest, it actually made me protected just like seeing police on patrol. Which is what I feel it is~ They were there to keep the peace. quincytoo Posted August 5, 2010 #37 Share Posted August 5, 2010 And Phoenix Arizona is #2 in the world. I still go to MLB spring training every year. Never had a problem in Mexico. Quite frankly I would be more afraid to go to Phoenix then I ever would Cabo, Mazatlan or especially my beloved PV. My brother's soon to be 19 year old stepson was shot three times (once in the head, once through the chest and once through the arm) in a parking lot during the day at some local mall in Phoenix. I agree. I have never felt unsafe at any mexican port. People seem to think there is less danger in the US than in foreign cities. When I go to Los Angeles, Oakland, Phoenix, or any other big US city, I always bring my gun with me.(and yes, as a police officer, I can legally carry concealed firearms)
Cruisekrazy63 Posted August 8, 2010 #39 Share Posted August 8, 2010 I have lived in Phoenix for 20 yrs and you just use common sense and not go to certain malls or bad areas where you know there is alot of crime. EVERY big city has crime and I would rather live here than in Los Angeles, NY or most other big cities. I understand that there are innocent victims but alot of crime in the city is gang related just like everywhere else. We have alot of tourist here and they must feel safe just like the prior posting said:Spring Training, Resorts, Sedona, Gr Canyon etc.
