Holds on credit cards

If you referring to when you check in at the pier.........

You can specify how much you would like to have "deposited" to your on-board account. When we did the Sky 4 day we calculated how much we estimated we would spend (including the DSC) and with the $90 OBC we estimated an additional $150 would be needed. On Thursday night we went to the Credit Desk and paid an additional $12.85 in cash to clear our account.

The one time I used our debit card was the last time. When we got back from our trip the entire amount of our Onboard Account was deducted, which was fine, but the next day each individual charge was also deducted, so NCL was paid twice. Big issue.....I called them and was told it would take 7-14 business days to receive the money back.....not so, I pushed hard and it was taken care of that day. Ever since I put down a cash deposit estimating what will should need and there has never been any problems.

Oh yea...never EVER use a DEBIT card for anything like this. Hotel, car rental or anything that the vendor will place a "hold" on funds.

Always use a CREDIT card. You can always pre-pay the amount you think you will spend to the credit card company if you wish.

We only use our debit card for purchases we would have used a check for in the past.

yes. they can put a hold on a credit card. usually only if you are spending a lot. we had them put holds on our credit card. we were getting cash in the casino. if fact, that cruise, our credit card company goofed and put another hold on our accout. we had to change credit cards rather they argue with the chase long distance.

the holds were the amount we had spend up to that time.

We were going to use our debit card for our cruise next month but after reading this thread i guess we wont. How does the cash option work? Is there a minimum amount that we must give them per person? Is it the same amount for our 10 month old daughter? Thank you.

As far as I know there is no minimum you have to put down. Maybe the amount of the DSC. Just remember that you will need to have a zero balance before you leave the ship. You will be required to scan your Seapass card to get off the boat on the last day. If you have a balance, you will be politely directed to return the the credit desk to correct the oversight.

I do not believe (I am sure I will be corrected) that your 10 mo old will be included in the DSC. I think that starts at 3 yrs of age. So calculate number of days x number of pax older than 3 X $12 per day and you will have the absolute minimum you will owe at the end of the cruise.

And I still don't believe they are putting a "hold" on credit cards. If you have reached your available credit limit on the card, then the cruiseline can "freeze" your account. It will then be up to you to provide additional funding source.
