jhunger Posted December 15, 2010 #1 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Hello Everyone, Does anyone know if I try to use my iphone in the inside passage will I be connected to the at&t network or will I automatically be connected to cellular at sea on the ship. I noticed on a cruise in April on Carnival Triumph leaving out of New Orleans I was connected to at&t while we in the MS river. I was wondering if it will be the same in the inside passage. I will be going to Alaska in July and will be on the Island Princess.
wolfie11 Posted December 15, 2010 #2 Share Posted December 15, 2010 I had my iphone with me last summer on an inside passage cruise. It works fine in ports and close to ports but you don't get service in between. DON'T call when the phone says roaming as you can get charged an arm and a leg. You can also pick up Canadian towers, which will cost around $0.35 a minute.
chipmaster Posted December 16, 2010 #3 Share Posted December 16, 2010 In ports if ATT is there you'll be fine as long as they provide service. We had no issue with sprint in 2 of our three spots, Skagway was bad. The inside passage takes you thru some areas that aren't heavily accessible by anything but ships, it ain't the Mississippi where I'm sure there is population along much of it so has coverage, YMMV. If you have to have it go to your carrier web site everyone shows their coverage! Why does one need phone or iPhone on vacation. I love it in some ways to be disconnected. :D Hello Everyone,Does anyone know if I try to use my iphone in the inside passage will I be connected to the at&t network or will I automatically be connected to cellular at sea on the ship. A380 Posted December 19, 2010 #4 Share Posted December 19, 2010 I traveled to Australia last year with my iPhone. I definitely agree with the poster who suggested not using the iPhone for roaming, but would like to add that data is the biggest problem. Check your settings in Settings -> General -> Network -> Data Roaming. Make sure this button is set to "off" to avoid hefty data roaming charges. Voice roaming isn't cheap - I only use my iPhone for emergency/urgent phone calls when roaming - but it's nowhere near data roaming charges.
