packedandready Posted January 28, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2011 Looking at oceanview on the Mariner. The cheaper cabins are on deck 2 but they are mid-ship. So....what makes them not as good as oceanview cabins on higher decks other than the fact that they are so far away from things?
yogimax Posted January 28, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2011 Nothing. The only problem on Deck 2 is on ships where there are cabins in the aft that are above the propellers.

iluvbkk Posted January 28, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2011 The good thing is they ar cheaper and you don't have a problem getting on the elevator...it won't be too full.

j&ps Posted January 28, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 28, 2011 We were on the Voyager a couple of weeks ago on Deck 2, cabin 2308. We did have a little noise occasionally when they were docking or putting out the anchor. Other than that, we love the location. As it's low and midships, very little movement even when folks up higher are really feeling it, it was only 2 or 3 decks from lots of activities and very quiet in the hallways. Unless we find a great deal on a balcony on a longer cruise, we'll always go for the lower decks.
Cuizer2 Posted January 28, 2011 #7 Share Posted January 28, 2011 At high tide you have to make sure everything is off the floor.
Puffinater Posted January 28, 2011 #8 Share Posted January 28, 2011 Nothing wrong with the cabins. They are just like the ones on the higher decks. It is just a location thing.

cb at sea Posted January 28, 2011 #10 Share Posted January 28, 2011 The lower the deck, the cheaper....with real estate, even on a ship, location is everything....so the higher decks are more expensive and closer to the daytime "fun" locations! Sun Lover Posted January 28, 2011 #11 Share Posted January 28, 2011 For our first cruise on Explorer, we were in a balcony cabin and did enjoy watching the ship coming into the different ports. We sat out there a few times, mostly at night, but didn't really use it a whole lot. On our next cruise we were on Adventure and just could not justify the added cost of the balcony so we decided to try Deck 2. Our cabin was midship also. We liked Deck 2 so much that we booked the same thing for our next cruise. As far as the elevators, when it opened on Deck 2, if there were people on it, they were getting off so we never had a problem with the elevators being crowded. Deck 2 was especially great for getting on and off the ship for excursions. While everyone had to wait for the elevators when returning from excursions, we just walked right to our cabin with no wait. As long as you check to make sure there is nothing above or next to your cabin which might be a noise problem, then I think you would be fine. We found our experience on this deck to be quiet and convenient.
Jenner9 Posted January 28, 2011 #12 Share Posted January 28, 2011 We had deck 2 on Mariner and we didn't have any trouble at all. The cabin was nice and the window was large. Larger than I expected. We joked that we were in "steerage". I would book again.
schmeed Posted January 28, 2011 #13 Share Posted January 28, 2011 On the bigger/newer ships, the lower decks are fine. On the older ships (i.e. Majesty and Monarch), you will be in the middle of the septic tank. It can be horrible down that low. Our first cruise was on Majesty on deck 3 when she was only 2 years old. Basically brand new and not a single problem. We were on her again a few years ago on deck 8. For giggles we went down to find our old cabin on 3. Stunk to high heaven down there. cruise wizard Posted January 28, 2011 #14 Share Posted January 28, 2011 Next time you are on deck 2 and the tides come in - look through the port hole and you will think that you are in an aquarium - lots of fish swimming right up to the window. Low tides are a bummer - you just see waves. Don't forget your camera!!!!
crusinmama06 Posted January 28, 2011 #15 Share Posted January 28, 2011 Ever seen the movie Titanic? ;) But seriously, it goes back to the days when "steerage" was placed on the lower decks and the higher class was placed on the higher decks. The higher the deck, the better the location...in theory only. Some people who get motion sickness prefer lower, more central decks, less movement, less sickness. :) So Deck 2 would be a better location for them. sandytoes03 Posted January 28, 2011 #16 Share Posted January 28, 2011 Sometimes it's a pain to wait for elevators, so, if you're on deck 2 you might be climibing lots of stairs. BUT, the gangway is often on deck 1 or 2, so coming or going from the ship would be easier. I have no problems at all with deck 2, other than it is farther away from most things. But, if deck 2 gets me on the ship, then I love deck 2!:D:)
TEXASMUNK Posted January 28, 2011 #17 Share Posted January 28, 2011 All of the cruise lines prefer folks in good physical condition to book deck two. That way, they are assured that all are capable of rowing when the Azipods fail. Stroke, stroke, stroke....
sara mom Posted January 29, 2011 #18 Share Posted January 29, 2011 Nothing! Take the stairs, all the time! Great way to burn all the calories you eat during the week!
DivingPrincessE Posted January 29, 2011 #19 Share Posted January 29, 2011 I agree with the poster that says the lower cabins (apparently only on some ships) smells AWFUL! We have been on the lower decks on the majesty and I felt like we were saying in a sewage treatment plant. Yuck! Also since you mentioned oceanview, the higher the deck, the longer the view. lcs Posted January 29, 2011 #21 Share Posted January 29, 2011 Loved deck 2!! We were on deck 2 on both the Voyager and Mariner. One cabin near the fron and one near the back. No noise or smell on either of them. Loved the locations. Be aware that there is a wall at both ends so you can't walk from one end to the other. You have to go to deck 4 for that. We always walked the stairs to deck 4 anyway and then would decide where we wanted to go. Our dining room was on deck 4 as well as the casino and Schooners Bar, our favorite. You'll enjoy that deck. awhcruiser Posted January 29, 2011 #22 Share Posted January 29, 2011 Nothing wrong with deck 2 but I like being on a higher up... Just a matter of preference. I have had people who have not cruised before ask if cabins that low are under water...LOL

packedandready Posted January 30, 2011 Author #24 Share Posted January 30, 2011 Thanks for the positive replies. I think I'll be looking at deck 2. Stairs for exercise is ALWAYS a good thing....the cookies always kill me :D. And the money saved....well, I'll be able to think of a way to use it. funfamilyof6 Posted January 30, 2011 #25 Share Posted January 30, 2011 We were on deck 2 all the way aft oceanview on the Freedom...we LOVED the location. We didn't hear any noise, NEVER had to wait for an elevator and found it easy to get off at ports compared to people higher up. You will LOVE all the money you are saving. Like you we had a balcony once on Disney and never used it. We don't understand why lower decks are considered "undesirable" but we just go along with it and enjoy the benefits.
