tropical.dreams Posted February 17, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 17, 2011 We were talking today and he said that when he went on his Carnival cruise 8 years ago, there was soda at the buffets for free. Now, it's been a while, but around that time, I worked in a travel agency and went on 2 cruises a few years prior, and don't remember that being true. So tell me...has there ever been free soda and I'm just not remembering, or is he crazy?
CRUZBUDS Posted February 17, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Yes -- He's crazy -- our first Carnival was 24 years ago and it hasn't changed Maybe he was on Disney - they have free soda

norcal2 Posted February 17, 2011 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Depending on his age on the cruise, he may have had a unlimited fountain card from mom and dad back then. (The only guess I had.) lol
salty dingo Posted February 17, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Definitely was no free soda on Carnival 8 years ago. So you will definitely win that argument!
boaterette Posted February 17, 2011 #6 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Back in 04 our kids got free soda in the dining room with dinner.
sharonh1885 Posted February 17, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Our son also received free sodas in the dining room also on Carnival's ship on several different cruises in the early 2000's.
GROUCHPUSS Posted February 17, 2011 #8 Share Posted February 17, 2011 I have with Carnival since 1987 and have never had free soda.
Nanaimobound Posted February 17, 2011 #9 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Our first cruise in 99 RCI Rhapsody offered free soda in the dining room only. I don't think we ever saw that again.
tidecruiser Posted February 17, 2011 #10 Share Posted February 17, 2011 The only cruise I have ever seen free fountain machines at the buffet, was American Hawaii's SS Independence. That was great!!! Wish it was something other cruise lines did, but alas not to be....
GlendaleCruiser Posted February 17, 2011 #11 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Our first cruise was in 1991 and the kids' sodas were always charged to S&S, even in the dining room, just like a drink from the bar. Never heard of a free soda in all that time.
mzloolue Posted February 17, 2011 #12 Share Posted February 17, 2011 In 2005 my daughter's cute 4 year old niece charmed herself a free coke every night at dinner.
G'ma Posted February 17, 2011 #13 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Back in the dark ages, when I started cruising...in the mid 70's and up to about the mid 80's, soft drinks were free. But, then, drinks were 1.50-2.00 each, with the daily specials 50-75 cents. Bingo was 1.00 a game/6 for 5.00, slots were loose, you could bring your own booze onboard....even a blender if you wished..also your guitar, banjo, boom box.....whatever. Nobody blinked an eye if a woman took off her top to sunbathe at the pool. Rarely any children...and the few that might turn up once in awhile had nothing to do..no childrens programs, baby sitters and they weren't permitted in the pool except for certain hours. There were toga parties, conga lines in the dining room to the top deck, orchestras, steel bands on the lido all day. The ship was met on the dock by island dancers. In Jamaica, they used to hand out Calico Jacks to ever passenger that came down the gangway...free.. Island entertainers would board the ship at his/her island...stay a coupla days, provide the entertainment, get off at the next island. Needless, to say, things have changed.......:D

O2Bcrusin Posted February 17, 2011 #15 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Definitely remember free soda in the dining room. Not sure if it was Carnival. May have been RCI which was then RCCL.
kjunea Posted February 17, 2011 #16 Share Posted February 17, 2011 I've never gotten a free soda on Carnival (been traveling on her since 1997), but I used to get a free soda on RCCL. Again, I haven't been on that line since the early 2000's....
AZchieffan Posted February 17, 2011 #17 Share Posted February 17, 2011 And where did my Lido deck horse racing go???:( Oh i so remember that. On my first cruise in 83 on the SS Rotterdam, they had that. And they would auction the horses for one race at the end of the cruise where the owner of the horse ( who was my father) got alot of money. Good times. Oh and also on that same cruise they served African Rock Lobster tails the size of my forearm. Order extra? Shoot you couldnt finish the first one. 19031 Posted February 17, 2011 #18 Share Posted February 17, 2011 I agree with the free soda's in the dining room. They only did it for kids and they changed their policy a few years ago but I know for sure Carnival did offer this as my DD enjoyed this perk most nights with dinner and was disappointed when they changed it. salty dingo Posted February 17, 2011 #20 Share Posted February 17, 2011 The OP was not asking about free sodas for kids in the MDR. The question was if there was free soda at the buffet. At least in the past 8 years on Carnival, the answer is an absolute NO.

1965 Posted February 17, 2011 #23 Share Posted February 17, 2011 No free sodas at buffet on any cruiseline in my experience. Only time we ever got soda free was on a riverboat cruise when my DH asked for it instead of wine with dinner.

LHP Posted February 17, 2011 #25 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Years ago, there was an "unwritten" perk that was extended to children under the age of 12 of free soda in the Main Dining Room at dinner. My children were "asked" if they wanted soda and it was given to them for free. BUT, Carnival stopped that at least 5 years ago.....
