Marriott Isla Verde - convenient pre-cruise?

For our upcoming cruise, we are looking into staying at the Marriott Isla Verde for the 3 days before we depart. Does anybody have any hints or recommendations regarding how this hotel compares to similar ones in San Juan?

 

My wife is primarily interested in some beach time, and it seems this hotel has good options for both the beach and pool.

 

I'm a little unsure about the convenience of Old San Juan, although from other posts it looks like there is regular bus service as well as frequent taxis.

 

This will be our 3rd cruise at Puerto Rico in 3 years and in the last two we stayed either in or near Old San Juan. I appreciate any tips regarding the Isla Verde hotels and locations, so we can be prepared for any significant differences.
