Airlifted from the Pearl - NCL was WONDERFUL!

We were on the Pearl sailing starting April 17,2011 from Miami going through the Panama Canal and ending in LA on May 1.

On Easter Sunday morning my husband fell in our cabin and broke his hip/leg.

From the moment the medical personnel arrived at the cabin until we were escorted off the ship to the ambulance taking us to the plane home we were treated like gold.

I did not have to do anything but pack. And they offered to do that for me too.

Guest services and the medical center nurses made all the arrangements for the airlift coordinating with the insurance company (another wonderful company). Thank God for air evacuation insurance. Definitely worth every penny and more. I was able to concentrate on my husband.

I have already Thanked these people in person. I will be sending a e-mail to the NCL corporate offices, but I want everyone to know how grateful we are.

NCL you are the best. In a scary situation you made it possible for me to stay calm for my husband.

My THANK YOU! can not be big enough.

Which travel insurance company did you use?

I am glad to hear he is doing well. Where in AZ is he? I am currently at Osborn Hospital in Scottsdale recovering from emergency surgery last week. Hoping to go home today and be able to go on our cruise in two weeks. I am glad my situation did not happen on board!

We were on the Pearl the week before and I got sick. The staff in the medical center took great care of me and made sure we were all set when we pulled into Miami on Sunday.

Thankfully I was feeling good enough to get off the ship on my own and we had an uneventful flight home, although it is still lingering even today.

They gave me some meds and checked me out. They said there would be no charge due to the diagnosis of Acute Gastroenteritis and nothing showed up on my account.

I worry about becoming seriously ill on a ship so I bought insurance from AccessAmerica. I bought the "Quick Trip Protector. I am covered for

$300,000 for emergency medical transportation. It was really afordable.

I will be crusing on the NCL Pearl on May 1,2011. "Nervous Nelly"!

Sorry about your husband's accident but very glad to hear all went well with NCL and the insurance. My husband was not feeling well on our recent Spirit cruise and I was so worried we would be finding out how well the insurance was. Even more, I was afraid of being in a hospital in a foreign country. Fortunately everything worked out fine.

Hello all. I hope it is O.K. with CC to post the name of the insurance company. We use Travel Guard Gold. I made one phone call after the accident. I did not have to do anything else. They took over along with NCL and made every arrangement. We always buy insurance and of course never thought we would have to use it in this way. We were having a really really good time and in an instant it was over. So nice not to have to worry about how to get him home and treated, or how we would pay for everything. Because our insurance was primary coverage, the insurance company paid the bills directly. Richard was released from the VA hospital in Tucson to the rehab unit this afternoon. He will spend about a week there and then 4 to 6 weeks of recovery.

Thank you everyone for good wishes. Dr. says he will be as good as new soon. He needs to recover so that we can get ready for our next cruise in Sept. On NCL of course :D and we will be purchasing Travel Guard Gold insurance.:D (I sound like a commercial) LOL

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's injury but it is another perfect example of why people need to buy insurance. Some don't realize that there are numerous things that can happen before a cruise or on a cruise to cause them to need insurance.

I am happy you had insurance and you answered a question that I had for a long time. I had wondered if you had insurance if you had to pay in advance and then get reimbursed but I knew if you had to get a helicopter to transport you it would be very expensive and I would not have that much money to do that. So your situation relieves my concerns.

I hope your next cruise is a lot better. Tell your husband to get well soon.

I am so pleased that your husband is doing well. I was not surprised to hear how professional and attentive NCL staff were throughout your ordeal. Their client care attitude is the main reason we feel loyal to NCL and would not consider sailing with another line.

We too buy Travel Guard Gold. We had two problems during cruises that were handled wonderfully. First, a serious illness of my father in law requiring us to leave a ship on the second day of a 10 day cruise. Our expenses to get home and lost days on the cruise were covered. Please, if this happens to you, keep copies of EVERYTHING. You may be asked to document something.

Second, DH slipped on water on a marble floor and was seriously injured. Not serious enough to be airlifted off but spend the next 2 days on morphine in the medical unit onboard then 6 days in a Miami hospital. Travel Guard handled all arrangements to change our flights, get a nurse to travel with us home as well as ambulance transport from the airport to our home about 100 miles away.

Again, be able to document.
