ozbuc Posted May 30, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 30, 2011 I am a train buff and my lovely wife loves to cruise. So I am trying to do some research well in advance of a trip. Right now I am looking for cruise lines that depart New Orleans or Houston and going through the Panama canal and arriving on the west coast or vice versa. We would take the train on way and cruise the other. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
geckog Posted May 30, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 30, 2011 What I wouldn't give for a Panama Canal cruise out of New Orleans or Galveston! You will find that there are three basic itineraries in both ports plus annual transatlantics. The three are Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel; Key West, Bahamas; and Roatan, Belize, Cozumel. You might find a Costa Maya here and there as well, and the shorter cruises either only go to Cozumel or to Cozumel and Progreso. Unfortunately, Amtrak doesn't go any further east in the south than New Orleans anymore without having to head north first.

7Flags Posted May 31, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 31, 2011 Galveston has a very nice Railroad Museum as well as a "Tall Ship" (Elissa) that might appeal to you in addition to the Cruise Lines.

Panama Canal cruises are available as round-trip partial transits or one-way complete transits. Partial transits usually sail round-trip from Florida. Ships that cruise the Panama Canal usually go through the first set of locks, then turn around in Gatun Lake and exit the canal the way they entered. Full transits typically sail from coast to coast, beginning in Florida and ending in one of several ports on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles or San Diego (or the reverse).
