GORDONCHICK Posted June 21, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 21, 2011 Here are a few of my favorites from our tour on 5/25: Taken with my Nikon D60.
Rllyfun Posted June 21, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 21, 2011 Great shots! Going to make some beautiful prints!!! What len combos did you take / what did you find usefull? (I'm starting to think about borrowing my daughter's D60,... its smaller/lighter & better general purpose IQ than my S2. I was going to only take P&S cams this Alaska trip,...cause I'm lazy, but hey!...) Thanks for posting the shots!:) ...
GORDONCHICK Posted June 21, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted June 21, 2011 I took the 18-55 & 55-200, both VR lenses. I love the D60 because it fits my hands so well and is very comfy!
ns_astronomer Posted June 22, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Carmen, Nice shots ... and some look familiar (see first one below -- looks like we took almost the same picture from the same location :)). Did you do your Whale Watching tour with Harv and Marv? The cruise was a lot of fun and the whale watching was a highlight. Paul
GORDONCHICK Posted June 22, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted June 22, 2011 We weren't with H&M, but the Haarvendam followed us out of Auke Bay. Great fluke shots BTW.
blakey Posted June 22, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Paul...what were you using to get those shots? (camera/lens/etc) We're looking at the Canon T3i.
ns_astronomer Posted June 23, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 23, 2011 Hi Blakey, Those pictures were made with the Canon 40D and the Canon 100-400mm lens. I recently purchased a 7D. The T3i is a good camera and can take just as good pictures as more expensive cameras (i.e. it has the same basic sensor). If the T3i is your first DSLR it will serve you very well. I always recommend looking at a camera in the store and make sure you like the feel and handling of it. Paul
Steviewonder1 Posted June 23, 2011 #8 Share Posted June 23, 2011 I have a Canon XTI and a Tamron 28-300 Image Stabilized lens on it. It works well and have some great Whale shots.

Just curious, did you shoot the whales on continuous or just got lucky with one shot? We're hoping to get some good shots of the whales and whatever else we happen to see (like bears, eagles, and such). :D
ns_astronomer Posted June 24, 2011 #10 Share Posted June 24, 2011 Hi Blakey, For birds and wildlife I shoot continuous autofocus and usually specifically select the autofocus point.
