What Happens to Unused Ship Board Credit

Recommended Posts

We are expecting a sizeable dollar amount in ship board credit from our travel agency. What happens to any unused funds at the end of our cruise that are not expended?

Best Regards,

Refunded in cash at the end of the cruise by Guest Services onboard the ship. Remember that your service charges will be taken off your onboard account, so for a 7 day-cruise, $11X2X7 or $154 will be eaten up already.

You can also go to the Purser's Desk and "draw" on your OBC's during the cruise. We did this for our private shore excursions and cash for

the casino. You do not have to explain what you are using the money for, either. Be sure to check your onboard acct the first or second day on board to be sure the credits are posted. Take along copies

of your paperwork from your TA - showing what they are promising.

Isn't it nice to spend other people's money !

It's interesting how it changes from one cruise line to another, even in the Carnival family. I sailed Costa Atlantica in Nov 2010 and lost much of my credits. I thought I could apply them to the gratuities at the end of the trip and was not allowed to do so. I'll be checking the rules for each sailing from now on.

IIRC it depends on what the credits are for.

If the credits were due to something for which you paid (e.g. a cancelled excursion or extra funds you deposited into your account,) the money will be returned to you.

If the credits were due to promotional extras (e.g. early booking credits or credit for Carnival stock ownership,) they are "use it or lose it."
