Best time for bear viewing

We are in the beginning stages of planning our Alaska trip for next summer and are wondering if is better to go in mid-to late July or early August. We were in Alaska in 2002 and went the last week of June and first of July and didn't get to take any bear excursions. Any suggestions for tours etc. will also be appreciated. We will be doing a land portion before we cruise. We cruised Princess in 2002 and will either use them again or possibly Holland America. Thoughts, suggestion, views will be appreciated.

Alaska is a big state; could you narrow it down a little? Where in particular do you want to do the bear viewing? a fly-in trip to Lake Clark on Katmai during your land tour? or Neets Bay or Anan during your cruise?
