Breezey Posted August 17, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2011 Any recommendations for our one day in Tasmania? Our ship ports in Burnie and understand Cradle Mountain is a must do. Would prefer not to go through the ship's excursion.

Would prefer not to go through the ship's excursion. We are using them in Dunedin and they do have a Cradle Mt excursion. You actually ca find them under ShoreTrips.co.NZ. So far great customer service with booking. Just search under Australia.
musicorn Posted August 18, 2011 #3 Share Posted August 18, 2011 It is an 108km drive to Cradle Mountain on a windy road so takes between 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way. It is lovely but a long drive for a day if you hire a car. You will also need to buy a National Park Pass for the day. Most of the time the ships organise buses into the township of Burnie but there is not a lot to do.

Thats very helpful. 4 hours of the day just travelling seems much when we only have one day in town. Any suggestions of things to do a bit closer? musicorn Posted August 18, 2011 #6 Share Posted August 18, 2011 If you really want to go to Cradle Mountain I would do an organised trip rather than a self drive. Burnie itself is a small township however the museum down town is worth a look. The shuttle bus will stop there. http://www.discoverburnie.net/what-to-see/museum.html Just outside of town there is the Latose Cheese factory and Hellyers Distillery http://www.about-australia.com/travel-guides/tasmania/stanley/attractions/agriculture-produce/lactos-cheese-factory-tasting/ http://hellyersroaddistillery.com.au/index.html If you do hire a car there is the Anvers Chocolate Factory at Latrobe which is about 55 kms away. They offer free tastings and you can view the factory through a window. http://www.anvers-chocolate.com.au/

eh2zed Posted August 22, 2011 #8 Share Posted August 22, 2011 We used Mount Classic in Burnie for our Cradle Mountain tour, etc. Very satisfied.
Sandylee Posted September 12, 2011 #9 Share Posted September 12, 2011 There are a few other things to do within a reasonable distance of Burnie. Lovely beaches, nice forest walks, caves, a wildlife park to see Australian native animals? The mountain roads (e.g. to cradle mountain) get twisty and slow, but the highways and closer to the coast are very good roads and the driving is quite fast and easy. Take a look at http://www.tasmaniasnorthwest.com.au/ for some ideas for places to go.
minkara Posted October 2, 2011 #10 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Any recommendations for our one day in Tasmania? Our ship ports in Burnie and understand Cradle Mountain is a must do. Would prefer not to go through the ship's excursion. I cruised to Burnie on the Radiance of the Seas 2 years ago. A shuttle bus did a regular round trip to the town via the local tourist information centre. I booked a tour there from a local tour operator with an 8-seater van for 1/2 the price of the same trip through the ship. It's a full day trip and well worth doing, however I don't recall getting any lunch. (You eat plenty on board anyway) Lots of photo stops and short walks, and lovely scenery. Breezey Posted October 2, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Thanks everyone. Our intent was never to do drive on our own. So, several weeks ago we booked a small private tour (there are 6 of us) with Howard at Cradle Coast Tours. We really wanted to go up to Cradle Mountain and he has put together a nice itinerary for us for a full day including several nice stops along the way and back. brissiegirl2 Posted October 10, 2011 #13 Share Posted October 10, 2011 Have just returned from a 28 day cruise around Australia on the Dawn Princess. I organized private shore tours for all of the ports we visited. I can highly recommend all of the companies that I used. Whilst in Tasmania, I booked 3 days with Murray's Day Out. On our day in Burnie, Murray drove us to Cradle Mountain where we visited the very picturesque Dove Lake. Then a stop a Weidorfers Cottage and Forest. On our way back through the magnificent countryside, we had a stop at the little town of Sheffield, reknown for its murals. Murray then met us in Hobart the next day to take us to Mt Wellington, Mt Fields National Park and Russell Falls, and then to the historic town of Richmond. Our second day in Hobart was spent traveling to the Port Arthur and surrounding area before squeezing in a visit to a winery and back to the ship. I can highly recommend Murray's Day Out!!! Murray will design an itinery to suit, and I know you won't be disappointed with his superior service that Murray provides to his clients! Cheers Janelle:)

So there are tour operators in port and we can decide what to do when we arrive? We will be there 02 Dec from 6 am - 5 pm. Thanks for any information. We were with her for three tours with Murray Smith. He did a great job. In Burnie, we went to Cradle Mountain and other sites.
