Prinsendam aft

Two years ago my wife and I were in the last cabin aft on the lowest deck of the Prinsendam. This was our first experience on the Prinsendam. I am glad that we were not inexperienced cruisers or sailors. When the ship is approaching a dock in the early morning the vibration and rattling is like nothing I have experienced on a ship. I have no idea what causes it but had happened every morning that we were docking.

For sure it woke us, but we actually found it sort of amusing. We had to get up early in any case to get ready for the port day. AND we didn't have to set a wake up call. However, the guests in the cabin next to us were horrified by the shake, rattle and roll. On sea days the action in the cabin was normal.

This past year we sailed back to the US from Europe on the Prinsendam again. This time we were very far forward. The shake, rattle and roll was not felt or heard there. However, we sailed through a pretty major storm and the motion of the ocean and slamming of the hull were very dramatic. Frequently the port holes would be submerged.

The Prinsendam for a variety of reasons is still my favorite ship. We are booked again this fall for a trans-atlantic. I don't remember which end of the ship we will be in. Unfortunately this will be our last trip on HAL for a long time. We were booked on a lengthy Asian cruise for next spring. HAL chartered the trip out and strung us along for months after the cruise left their website and insisted that the cruise would sail. It did not. They were highly rude and it will be a long time before we sail on them again. We had booked the Prinsendam far in advance and were unable to cancel it. Shame on HAL head office. But the Prinsendam and it's staff are the best.

I remember that noise! We usually heard it in the dining room at breakfast while docking. Our delightful cabin was mid ship, slightly forward - very quiet. We enjoyed sailing the Norwegian fiords on the Prinsendam this summer. Hope you enjoy your cruise and the ship as well.

The aft staterooms on the Prinsendam were retro fitted and shake and vibrate in unison. Not only are they "tinny" but they are above the ship's hydraulics. We had to put towels behind the wall hangings to keep them from vibrating noisily. Also, if seas get a bit rough the water from the pool above spills over onto the aft verandahs. At least this is how it was last summer. We too loved the ship and eventually relocated to midship where we had no problems at all. Would not hesitate to rebook on the Prinsendam but not in the new aft cabins.
