BeachChik Posted September 11, 2011 #301 Share Posted September 11, 2011 Correct... we won't be happy until it is banned... period. Oh, and since clearly you are uneducated, allow me to broaden your understanding a little. Smoke is an allergen. The chemicals and smoke particulates have the potential to cause a histamine response in anyone (as does all smoke). I am constantly amazed by smokers who are so addicted to smoke that they will just not listen to reason. Case and point is my mother. Her father got lung cancer, doc said it was directly caused by his 25 years of smoking. She is convinced that the Dr. is heavily invested in nicoteen patches, and that her dad had the kind of lung cancer not caused by smoke. She still smokes to packs a day (and has all sorts of health problems related to smoking). She is also broke, can't afford bill payments, but has no trouble affording her trusty pack of smokes. It is sad really... addiction has such a powerful grip on people. Smokers have my empathy and pity. Actually to clarify cigarette smoke is NOT an allergen but an irritant. So while it may bother you, you are not allergic to it. I have never smoked but both parents and grandparents smoked at one point in their lives. It amazes me that people act like it is so easy to quit. Many smokers try repeatedly to quit. Most can't just stop on a dime.

It can cause a full blown asthmatic attack in some people.....that would seem like more then a bother lol!

cuyahoga11 Posted September 12, 2011 #306 Share Posted September 12, 2011 Every cruise I have been on Lido smoking side was full and the non-smoking side empty. We always have to hunt for a table. Just off the Fantasy yesterday and the same thing. Had to stand in line to get a table on the smoking side while non-smoking tables sat empty. Also smokers were playing non-smoking machines in the casino because all the smoking machines were in use and we know the casino does not want to send people away that want to donate their money
boaterette Posted September 12, 2011 #307 Share Posted September 12, 2011 Doesn't everyone have the right to breathe clean air. Having to smell the smoke of a smoker out on the balcony is not only unpleasent...but it is unhealthly. Second hand smoke causes cancer among other things. Why should someone elses bad habit cause me to be uncomfortable. :( Where do you live that has clean air. I live in a smog filled society. Mostly caused by automobiles. Can you please join me in banning them ?
boaterette Posted September 12, 2011 #308 Share Posted September 12, 2011 I agree-the general environment is pollution-why keep adding to it? I don't accept carcingenic in my world-use all organic and natural cleaning products as well as creams lotions and make-up. so basically your justification is it's there anyway, so what difference does it make if I add to it?! the exact sentiment that has contributed to our carcinogenic world.pat Finally someone who walks everywhere. MissDiva1 Posted September 12, 2011 #312 Share Posted September 12, 2011 Bellagio Ahh nice! So you will be able to see the fountain shows every night out front. It's really nice at Christmas when they do the shows with Christmas carols. We pretty much make a point of seeing someone in concert there. We just enjoy going out to dinner and drinks and just walking home to our hotel room. So basically we just go to a concert one night, hang out by the pool during the day and gamble all night. I'm not into the Vegas shows however we did get to see Siegfried & Roy before the accident. It was an awesome show. So I guess I'm not a good one to tell you what's not to miss lol! We will be there the second week of Oct. for the Jimmy Buffett concert......too bad we will miss you by just a couple of weeks.......we could have hooked up:) Is it OUR fault someone is asthmatic? Why would you even ask this:confused:

We could have met up for drinks and talked about anything beside this place...LOL!! We do have Elton John tickets....but we don't gamble :p, so we have to find other things to do at night. I'm sure there will be enough shows to choose from.

wentworth Posted September 13, 2011 #315 Share Posted September 13, 2011 Quit smoking 13 years ago. OUr first of 11 cruises was in 1994 and I can remember leaning over the railing and chatting with our neighbors. They were also smoking so there was no problem. On our next three cruises if our neighbors were not smoking we asked if our smoke bothered them. I don't recall anyone saying yes. We were smoke free on our cruises from 1997 on. We still lean over the railing to chat with our neighbors. If they smoke they usually ask if it bothers us. I tell them no, go ahead. If it gets too heavy for us we go inside until they finish. WTH happened? Times have changed. Rather than be rude and inconsiderate, get along and both enjoy your cruise. It's not hard to do. And until the rules change people will smoke on their balcony because they are allowed to.

For those keeping track at home, this argument is valid for smokers but invalid for people throwing articles over the railing, i.e. messages in bottles. I have yet to run into a smoker (in real life) that trys to justify how a puff won't hurt us because we are all going to die anyway:p Or we are breathing diesel fuel so what difference does it make:rolleyes:! How ridiculous! I guess I hang at the wrong places with the wrong groups because we have seen more considerate people then not on both sides. Cushing985 Posted September 15, 2011 #322 Share Posted September 15, 2011 I get that. I am really just asking honestly now. What is it I am missing? Just curious really. Is there actually an answer? I'll give you a honest answer to your question...Why do smokers smoke? (essentially). For me it started when I joined the Army, continued through my year in Vietnam as a medic until by the time I thought about quitting I found out I really didn't have it in me to stop. Talk about an addictive personality! After smoking for 40 years or so I picked up an E-Cig and haven't smoked a real cigarette since. No withdrawals as I'm still getting my nicotine...no smells, don't bother people, etc. Nicotine as been liken to hard drugs as far as quitting is concerned. Most smokers, in my opinion, want to quit but, like me, can't. So, cut them some slack. I swear, I don't understand the balcony issue, The ship is moving along at 20 knots or so and I would think the smoke would follow the wind. You might get a whiff every once in awhile but I wouldn't think the smoke from upwind would swirl around your balcony. There have been a few reasonable posts on this thread but too many on both sides of the equation have shown me this argument is a lot like the abortion issue. Not many will see the problem from the other's perspective. Lets talk about tips!:D
Cushing985 Posted September 15, 2011 #323 Share Posted September 15, 2011 We have had balconies next to smokers. We could smell their noxious fumes when we were in port. At sea, the 20+ mph winds carried the smoke away. As to the future, I believe we will see phase 2 of the evolution of the smoking rules on Carnival next year at this time. We will see balcony smoking banned. We will see even more interior areas included in the smoking ban. Even European lines are now restricting smoking more and more. It is the inevitable wave of the future. In two years, we will see the final step of the smoking rule changes. That will be a total ban on smoking on the ships. It will happen. It will happen soon. Ah, but they will lose the smokers to ......................................................................................................... nowhere. Almost every place prohibits smoking now. Most cruise lines right now are more restrictive than Carnival. Smokers, you are second class citizens and I really do not have a whole lot of sympathy for you. I quit when cigarettes hit 60 cents a pack. You can quit, save lots of money, and be healthier too. Doc Very nice. You aren't a real doctor, are you? If you are I do feel sorry for your patients. Cushing985 Posted September 15, 2011 #324 Share Posted September 15, 2011 I was right there with you in the good old days. I'll never forget a friend of mine was working as a school nurse . At the beginning of the school year any student that needed some kind of medication during the day had to turn it in to the nurses office to be kept there and administered by the nurse . By the end of the day she said her desk looked like Amy Winehouses medicine cabinet. Syringes, pens, inhalers, pills, you name it . A stack of doctors notes why they can't go outside, take gym, stay after school, go out in the rain, go to ther bathroom. Its not a school , its a hospice. You're cracking me up!:D I spilled my coffee!! But so true.
astropilot Posted September 15, 2011 #325 Share Posted September 15, 2011 If you want to avoid the smokers on their balcony, you need to book a balcony cabin as far forward as possible. As the smoke will go aft when the ship is moving you need to be in front of them not behind them. Smokers YOU need to book a balcony as far aft as possible so you don't upset anyone. OK? You got it? Non-smokers forward, smokers aft. Or maybe it ought to be smokers forward, non-smokers aft....
