pjhootch Posted October 6, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 6, 2011 It is a closed loop cruise from American soil, so passports aren't necessary, although there will be a lot of folks that are about to tell you why they are preferred. :D

ATL2LAS Posted October 6, 2011 #6 Share Posted October 6, 2011 After the fiasco with this last hurricane, please impress upon your friends the importance of getting a passport. If the ship has to leave early and they can get you to the next port, you will need a passport to travel.

ChefSusan Posted October 6, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 6, 2011 You *can* fly into San Juan with only a Birth Certificate, but be aware that if anything happened and you needed to be flown home or to let off the ship at another port (specifically for a medical emergency), you will have a very hard time getting home. You have enough time to get a passport, and I would suggest you do so. Even Carnival strongly suggests a passport over any other type of identification. carhopsrock Posted October 7, 2011 Author #10 Share Posted October 7, 2011 I have been to San Juan before with the same group of people that I am cruising with in April. I dont remember anyone asking us to see our BC's as we were coming or going. It was just like flying to another state. I did mention that they should get a passport for all the reasons that were mentioned above but they dont want to spend the extra money!
agc291 Posted October 7, 2011 #11 Share Posted October 7, 2011 They do not ask for any sort of identification coming into SJU. BC worked fine for us when we left out of SJ in March.
AALCRUISER Posted October 7, 2011 #12 Share Posted October 7, 2011 Plenty of time to get a passport, like other post, it something does happen and you need to fly home from another port, it will be a lot of hassle. Yes they are expensive, but since it it good for 10 years,(I think) it really is not that much. Much less hassle, who knows, they might choose to fly to one of the places they visit on their cruise in the future.
