Best transportation from Southampton?

Sailing on Celebrity Constellation (Baltic and Scandinavian cruise) and arriving in Southampton. What is the best method of transportation to London?

 

And, can someone recommend moderate accommodations in London?

We had a good expeience with National Express coach service from Southampton to Victoria Coach Station.

We were able to walk from the coach station to the Luna and Simone Hotel to spend 3 days exploring London. (Please note: no elevator or air conditioning.)

It depends on how many people you have and what you want to do. Train or bus will be cheaper if you are a party of 1 or 2.

 

We had a party of 5 and wanted to see some of the countryside on our way back to London. We hired a van from Smiths for Airports. We went to Salisbury and Windsor. The driver also took us to a nice restaurant full of locals for lunch. We basically had a private van and driver for the whole day for under 200 pounds. We were very pleased with the service and the driver was very personable.

 

I would also recommend the Luna Simone IF you can get a room on the ground floor or maybe the first floor. Either that or you had better be in good shape! (We were in a lot better shape when we left!) Lots of stairs. The wi-fi didn't reach the top of the hotel, but they do have a computer room in the basement.

 

The location is fabulous. The 25 bus runs right past their door and will take you everywhere in London. It runs every 4 minutes 24/7. We even went to the theater on the bus.

We went with Woodford Chauffeurs and had a great experience. There were nine of us and needed two different vehicles to transport us all and our bags. After the cruise, we wanted to sidetrack and hit Stonehenge on the way to Heathrow and we were able to tailor the excursion the way we wanted. Cheryl Finch is the contact.

We were pleasantly surprised with cost and location of The Holiday Inn, Coram Street London (Bloomsbury area near Russell Square Tube Station). Good buffet breakfast included.

National Express is a good budget option but if you have a lot of luggage, check the allowances on their website before you book.

If you are interested in a private car service, google Smith's to the Airport. We used this service last spring. Very professional.

Also used SMITH'S...and highly recommend. We used them from the Airport to our Bed and Breakfast; from Bed and Breakfast to Southampton; and then from Southampton to Heathrow, via Stonehenge....All 3 trips were great. Ask for Andy or Jeff...you'll have some great conversations, with history lessons thrown in !!

Depends on what "best" means to you...

 

Sometimes it means lowest price...other times it means most convenient...

 

Any car service will be most convenient--since they will take you from the ship directly to your hotel...Of course, it can be quite expensive as well...

 

Last cruise out of Southampton, we decided to save a whole lot of money and take the train...

 

Of course, we had to take a very short cab ride from the ship to the RR Station...and we needed another cab to get from Victoria Station to our hotel...

 

But the train ride, purchasing at least 30 days ahead over the internet from Southern Railroad, came out to a mere £4.25 per person!! A fairly comfortable two and a half hour train ride...Not even the bus can get you there that easily and inexpensively...

Train - check out the website megabus and select train - that's the cheapest way to get a train as the prices in this country get very expensive

We chose to do the train method. We prebooked our train tickets from southwest trains and they were $44/pp in 2009. We took a taxi from Southhampton to the train station. The train station and train were nice and clean. Then we took a taxi to our hotel once we were at Victoria Station. I am not sure how Celebrity works, but Princess also offered a coach to London (airports only if I remember). All I remember is that the coach was alot more expensive. If I remember correctly, there was a cheaper train car, but I think we booked too late to get the cheap rates.
