I am going to be in greece doing a land tour and was wondering if anyone knew of a good (hopefully cheap) way to get between Santorini, Mikanos, and Athens....we would also like to go to Kelfalonia if it is easy enough to get to.

Rick Steves did an episode on travel in the Greek Isles. He focused on Santorini, Mykonos and one more. I saw a repeat the other night. He used the overnight ferry for one of the trips and a hydrofoil for another.

You may want to google his site and see if there is an information replay you can see. That episode was very informative about getting around the Greek Isles cheaply.

In every Greek island port town you'll find lots of travel agencies with boards outside giving all the week's ferry departure times. As stated, ferries are plentiful and go to all the islands, from the smallest to the largest. A good book to obtain is "Greek Island Hopping" by Frewin Poffley and published by Thomas Cook. It comes out every year and has everything you need to know about every island and how to get from here to there. The other source I use is the Greek Travel Pages (http://www.gtp.gr) which lists all the ferry schedules up to date.

In Season frequent ferry services link Piraeus (Athens Port) with most Greek Islands. Many inter island ferry services also operate.

The services tend to be thinner on the sea in the Off Season (November - April) as largely only the locals use them off season .

There's a very good book, "Greek Island Hopping", published annually - the 2012 edition will be available in February 2012. It goes into extraordinary details about ferry routes between the mainland and the islands, and also inter-island ferries.
