Planning a cruise going from Argentina (Buenos Aires only) to Uruguay to Chile. Yellow Fever Vaccination document required?

Like to make sure. Thanks!

It is probably not required, although Cruise Critic is not the final source on requirements. It will be made by the countries you are entering.

If you decide to go to Iguazu Falls prior to boarding in Argentina, please be aware that the area is endemic for Yellow Fever and you should get protection by way of the vaccine if you don't have any contraindications.

Remember, the mosquito is not going to ask you if you took the vaccine prior to biting you and all it takes is one bite.

I just went to our center for disease control and innoculations today. The specialist checked the requirements for entering Uruguay from Argentina. She ended up giving us a waiver for yellow fever vaccine due to health reasons. The latest info she found said you must have proof of yellow fever vaccine or a waiver.

She went on to say, as a cruiser, we were highly unlikely to catch it, but it is a political requirement. She has had many people call her from SA asking for help when they were not allowed to enter Uruguay.

I have gone across on the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia or Montevideo, Uruguay many times. There is no Yellow Fever requirement for entering Uruguay from Argentina. Never has been in my experience, going back as far as fall 2001 and as recently as March 2010. Also, yellow fever documentation is not required for re-entry to the United States from Argentina. If you are not going to visit Iguazu, there is no requirement or need to get the yellow fever vaccination. The CDC and WHO web sites should provide up to date information.

I too, have not seen any requirement from Uruguay regarding Yellow Fever documentation.

I agree that the vaccination is not required for Iguazu Falls, howver the map provided by the CDC for areas endemic for Yellow Fever shows very clearly that the area is endemic for YF. The YF mosquito is a daytime mosquito so they will definitely be around during the touring time.

If you are not willing to get the vaccination, make sure you are well protected with plenty of insect spray with a high deet content.

All it takes is one bite.

The first documented case of Yellow Fever in over 40 years was reported in Misones Province (the area around Iguazu) in 2008. I believe there have been two other cases since that time. Even though the chances of contracting the disease are minimal it is still wise to be vaccinated, per the CDC recommendation.

Dengue Fever is also reported occasionally in Misones. There is no vaccine for Dengue. It is best to spray yourself with a high Deet repellant.

Is insect repellent with DEET available in Buenos Aires or Iguazu at a reasonable price? Where would one buy it at these locations?

I assume it`s any insect repellent with DEET, not a particular one for mosquitoes only?

DEET is DEET. There is no mosquito-specific DEET.

I really like a solid (like a deodorant stick) made by Cutters. It is a small tube, easy to carry and not subject to the liquid TSA regulations. I have bought it at REI and seen it at some drug stores. Great for putting in your pants pocket, purse or backpack and reuse it during the day. It doesn't get on your hands and it is easy to put on your face.

You can buy insect repellents in South America in the same places you can here, but why worry about that when you are there? Bring some with you.

We are visiting both sides of Iguazu Falls and have chosen not to get the YF vac. Just purchased 98% Deet in 1 oz small spray pump from Dick's Sporting Goods, $7.

Be sure to follow directions for use if you use DEET in high percentage concentrations. You might want to do some Google research and/or small spot skin testing before usage of 98% DEET. Reportedly: "Use of DEET concentrations above 50 percent have been associated with increased skin irritation and similar reactions."

We're also going to Iguazu and plan to use a 25-35% DEET product. We got the YF waiver because our travel clinic doctor said that for people our age (late 60's), the risk for serious adverse reaction and/or death from the YF vaccine shot is greater than the risk of getting a serious case of yellow fever and/or death. What was your reason for not getting the YF vaccine?

Does anyone know who carries the Deet that comes in a cream? It is in (or was) a orange container.

Also I thought some sprays were not allowed on planes (or just not as carryon?).

Regarding Yellow Fever shots, if you travel a lot it may be mandatory whether or not you were able to get into some countries without the shot.

For example, my understanding is if you have been in Brazil you cannot get entrance into China without that vaccination.

Just back from that cruise with DH who had previously (ie 2 weeks previously and therefore should have been checked) been in Nigeria. He had all his yellow fever certification which was with us in the room, the passports were held by the ship for immigration. On arrival in Rio they were handed back to us, duly marked right beside the Nigerian entry exit page with Uruguay and Brazil entry/exit stamps.

We had fully expected to be called by Guest Relations and asked to bring his Yellow Fever Cert down (they had said to us on embarkation, you keep it and we will call you if we need it) but we were never called

So our experience is that they not only do not check entries from their neighbours, they do not check when someone has come recently from a highly infected area!

PS I would get protection if you are able it is a useful thing to have

  • 2 weeks later...

We just returned today from Uruguay, Argentina, Chili, Falkland Island and Iguazu Falls. We did get the YF Vac because the CDC said that it is recommended, not required. We had our proof of vac, and we were never asked about proof of vac nor were we asked if we had the vac. In fact, the topic of YF never came up during our 25 days in So. Amer.

We went to a travel clinic prior to our cruise and they said we could get it for peace of mind if we wanted. We opted for peace of mind.
