califgary Posted January 9, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 9, 2012 I read a disturbing item on the board that I need to ask all the folks in the know a question. I read that someone was on Eurodam recently and they had a Retreat Cabana - it turns out that area was closed alot due to weather conditions (they were wondering about any refunds) - my question is.....Is this common to have that area closed?? We paid $749 for a family cabana on a 14 day cruise and if these things are closed frequently Im thinking about not doing it - Any thoughts on this? As always all info appreciated! A thread from someone JUST off the Eurodam 2 days ago (review was posted just a couple hours ago and is being updated as she gets housework etc., done) and they had a Cabana that they used the entire cruise: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1544711 I do remember old posts about the Retreat Cabanas being closed in rain and heavy winds, which would make sense. Funny you saw that report, but didn't see the thread from yesterday where we discussed this. My report was we were on N. Amsterdam for 14 days, and were able to use our cabana for all but about 1 hour one day, due to weather. We rode out several heavy rains. No problem. Krazy Kruizers Posted January 9, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 9, 2012 No one can predict what the weather will be on a cruise. But it only makes sense that if there are high winds and long periods of rain in a day -- the Retreat Cabanas could be closed.
califgary Posted January 9, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted January 9, 2012 agreed on the weather issue - just off Statendam last week and the wind factor (gale force) coming up from Cartegena to Florida made me concerned about the potential closures. I would hate to waste the $750 is all. We had such a great time on Statendam we may just do that itinerary again (2 different ports than this past itinerary)... thanks to all for the input! I am going a little off topic here but I am curious how many sea days on you upcoming cruise? I am guessing four which means you are paying $187 per sea day for the cabana's, is that right? I would not think you would use them on a port day. Each to their own, not trying to offend or start something but I just don't see me doing that. There are too many other things I enjoy doing on sea days (certainly lounging in one for a part of the day would be nice :p) .
KirkNC Posted January 9, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 9, 2012 OK, I got curious and went to HAL and see that the price ranges from $30 to $75 per day (this is a 2008 press release so the price might be higher now). That sounds a little better if you can just reserve them for a couple sea days.

That sounds a little better if you can just reserve them for a couple sea days. The price hasn't changed. We came up with about $35/day for a 14 day cruise. We managed to spend an hour or two every port day, and never missed the champagne.
califgary Posted January 10, 2012 Author #9 Share Posted January 10, 2012 4 sea days plus Half Moon Cay 2 days (we would stay on ship for the 2 Cay days) so 6 days total on board for sure - this price is for a family cabana so we could have a little bit more room to move around. Typhoon1 Posted January 10, 2012 #10 Share Posted January 10, 2012 I would guess the winds would have to be really severe for them to close the Retreat. It's for your own protection.

Yep- If they close it alot, fight for the refund. It does not hurt. If an excursion is cancelled, they refund you. Best $ we ever spend.
smaNJ Posted January 11, 2012 #12 Share Posted January 11, 2012 We were on the Eurodam 12/31 and there were a couple rain periods, didn't last long and we used our cabana. They were never closed on our cruise but we never had severe weather. Our guys would close the flaps looking out on the water so it didn't blow in but we were fine. We also used it on port days when we would get back to the ship for at least an hour or two. I could understand heavy winds and severe weather closing them down though. Have fun on your cruise! Cindyloowho2 Posted January 11, 2012 #13 Share Posted January 11, 2012 Can you reserve by the week online, or do you have to call HAL?
smaNJ Posted January 11, 2012 #14 Share Posted January 11, 2012 Can you reserve by the week online, or do you have to call HAL? I did it through our TA.
barbarah33 Posted January 11, 2012 #15 Share Posted January 11, 2012 Unless something has changed very recently you have to call HAL; reserving a retreat or lido cabana online is not possible. It's a quick phone call, just have your CC ready.
Cindyloowho2 Posted January 12, 2012 #16 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Thanks so much. I am not sure if my DH will want to spend the $$$ for the whole, maybe only a day or 2. I know that has to be done on the ship, and doubt any will be available on sea days. I will try to convince him this is a must do.
Sir PMP Posted January 12, 2012 #17 Share Posted January 12, 2012 .....Is this common to have that area closed?? They should be removed completely, then you don't need to close the area, we don't need a cheap camping or safaripark to look at...just plain tacky.. CruiserBruce Posted January 12, 2012 #21 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Do they have the retreat cabanas open and staffed on departure day? Say about 1pm?Mary They will definitely be available by 3pm. On our B2B, one FLL day they struggled to get them open by 3, the other FLL day, they were available by 2.
Wakepatrol Posted January 12, 2012 #22 Share Posted January 12, 2012 I just keep picturing a guy, sitting in his cabana attempting to read the newspaper in 70 knot winds, because he paid for it. Don't laugh "There's One On Every Cruise"
