Yes I know, but I was trying to say that I don't believe the Concordia will ever sail again under any name! Having seen the underwater pictures and the possibility that there is another gash on the other side of the ship, I think she will be a total loss.

 

I agreee. Electrical systems and other metal not fully protected submersed in salt water...total loss. We are not talking a 22 foot lyman here, we are talking about a city at sea.

If she can be salvaged, Carnival Corp. will salvage her, she's only 6 years old.

 

EDIT: Thanks for the update, Runs, did he mention if there is anyway to secure the ship so she doesn't slip any further off that shelf and completely submerge?

Hi all. I just wanted to provide an update to the salvage operation onboard the Concordia, I first posted a couple days ago. My brother-in-law is the senior salvage master for Titan Salvage and flew to italy and boarded the Concordia early Saturday morning.

 

So my wife talked to him a couple hours ago after he got back to the hotel to work on computer models for the ship. Just a side note, my wife and brother are extremely close and his profession is very dangerous so she gets worried. And everything that he said about how they're doing this may not be how they will be doing things, so take it with a grain of salt. Anyway, he is working with a Dutch company (I forget the name) in the salvage operation. They hope to be getting the fuel and other hazardous materials out within the next few days. They do not know if they will be able to save the ship (GRAIN OF SALT PLEASE!) due to how shallow the water is but they do not want to have to break up the ship. 1) Because it will destroy the environment and 2) they won't get paid (they only get paid if they save the ship). But what they want to do is put a temporary patch on the hole, pump out the water, partially re-float her and tow her out ("Without hitting any more of those g** D**n rocks," he said) to where ever carnival wants her. Now again, this may not be what happens. It is still WAY too early to tell what exactly they will do. They have to run countless computer models, go over hundreds of different scenarios, get equipment, etc. But they will be getting the fuel out and all the other HAZMAT out in the next few days.

 

I will probably provide another update in a couple days. If you have any questions, post them and I'll try and answer them in the next couple hours.

That's what I thought too, but I was watching all the videos today and she seemed to be even deeper! Could be the weight of the water which kept flowing in and also today when she moved!

I do have a question though - someone asked about the risk of the ship sliding off of the shelf - I, too, would be interested in knowing if they can prevent that from happening or does the placement of the ship currently hinder the righting of it?

 

I see on one of the pictures on their website they have big cables anchoring a ship, but it doesn't show what they are anchoring it too. Maybe they can drive something into those really big rocks next to the ship and secure some cables to that (speculating)

I can't say it's disgusting or horrifies me. It's not like he dove to a wreck, disturbed folks final resting place, then sold those folks stuff for an ungodly amount of money.

Its at best TACKY, especially since people lost their lives in this incident.

 

If and when they refloat and refurbish the Concordia, he can make sure to book the Grand Suite on the first voyage and then he can sell that on e-bay also. That would also be TACKY. :D

Looks to me like they are trying to profit off of their own tragedy. Some might say "making lemonade out of lemons". I too think that it's a little morbid, but who am I to judge the actions of one of the survivors.

Wow. What do I know, but when I saw these pictures I thought it will be a miracle if they can salvage the ship. Especially if they have a 30 million deductible & insurance covers the rest.
