Off topic but: Thousands rescued as cruise ship runs aground.

Recommended Posts

Divers were looking for 19 people officially missing, but there may have been people on board who were never registered as either crew or on passengers lists, said the head of Italy's protection agency, Franco Gabrielli.

"Passengers may have been invited on board at the last minute by a crew member," the agency's spokeswoman Francesca Maffini explained.

Thanks THIED. Another reason for Aussies to register with Australian Government's Smart Traveller. Just registered for our 11weeks away, 9 March to 25 May. The Govt notifies the Australian Embassy, nearest to where you are, in case of problems.

I took that comment to mean that they were not registered on the ships list...ie ;

Stowaways ??

But how would they have got on board with the sophisticated security systems they have these days.???.

Exactly David, crew members bringing on guests, i.e. wifes/partners/husbands, without them being checked in? Scary.

I did not think of that....

I can see it now though.......

Mate on the card swipe machine....wink, wink...nod,nod.

Boy ...I bet that gets clamped down on for all ships from now on.

I don't think it can happen on most ships. It is scarey though.:)

I read that... "The ship's purser, Manrico Giampedroni, ruled out that theory.

It was "impossible there were clandestine or unregistered people" on board, he told ANSA news agency.

"They are registered and photographed on boarding. It's all electronic. The Costa is a serious company," he added......." Source: AFP

So, if it WAS done and, so far, it is only conjecture, it was done in a very underhanded manner.

Well they should be registered and photographed, BUT...! Some one always shortcuts the system. I like the quote..'Costa is a serious company.'

ITALIAN authorities believe there may have been unregistered people on board the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner, as they struggled to put a number on the missing.

As divers pulled a woman's body from the wreck off the Tuscan coast, raising the death toll to 13, officials admitted to uncertainty over how many people were still missing

Gabrielli said relatives of a Hungarian woman have claimed she telephoned them from the ship, but there is no official record that she was on board.

Sources suggested that since the luxury liner hit rocks just two hours after setting sail from Civitavecchia, it was possible that the names of last-minute passengers had not yet been added to the relevant lists.

But the ship's purser Manrico Giampedroni ruled out that theory.

It was "impossible there were clandestine or unregistered people" on board, he told ANSA news agency.

"They are registered and photographed on boarding. It's all electronic. The Costa is a serious company," he added.

its not hard to give the link

Okay, why do most threads seem to degrade into this sort of conversation lately?

Anyhoo, back on topic. One of the passengers aboard Costa Concordia has uploaded a whole load of videos from on board the ship throughout the whole disaster. Some of it is pretty compelling. I can't believe the footage of the plates sliding across the floor in the buffet. You can see 18 videos or so here... http://www.youtube.com/user/davesfx

You have to go to the bottom of his channel and load the other videos (they'll drop down below) and start at the ones towards the bottom. Work your way up to the videos at the top.

Two more bodies have been pulled from the wreckage of the Costa Concordia, the cruise ship grounded off the coast of Tuscany.

Divers recovered the bodies of two women from the ship's Internet café, the national civil protection agency official in charge of the search said Monday.

That brings the number of confirmed dead to 15.

Officially, there are now 17 people still missing. However, officials said over the weekend that there may have been unregistered guests on board at the time of the accident.

Franco Gabrielli, the Italian civil protection official in charge of the rescue effort, told reporters at a briefing Sunday that they have reason to believe a Hungarian woman was aboard the ship unregistered. The woman's relatives told them that the woman had telephoned from aboard the ship but that they haven't heard from her since.

Gabrielli said it was possible that a woman's body pulled from the wreckage on Saturday might be that of the unregistered passenger.

The Globe and Mail's Eric Reguly, reporting from Rome, says these unregistered passengers are creating a big problem for recovery officials.

"They don't actually know how many are missing. Officially, it's 19 but it could be several more. They just don't know because they don't know how many were unregistered on the ship," Reguly told CTV's Canada AM Monday morning.

SALVAGE experts can begin pumping fuel from a capsized cruise ship as early as today to avert a possible environmental catastrophe and the ship is stable enough that search efforts for the missing can continue, Italian officials said.

The decision to carry out both operations in tandem was made after instrument readings determined that the Costa Concordia was not at risk of sliding into deeper waters, Franco Gabrielli, chief of the national civil protection agency, told reporters.

"The ship is stable ... There is no problem or danger that it is about to drop onto much lower seabed," Gabrielli said on the island of Giglio.

It has been reported that the father of the 'missing' Hungarian woman advised authorities that she had telephoned from the ship and that they have not heard from her since. She was not registered as being on the ship.

Now Hungarian authorities have reported that the 'missing' woman died three years ago!! Obviously her father would have known that. Is this possibly a case of someone setting themselves up to claim compensation for the death of a family member when they weren't even on the ship? :(

Sadly, I think that's probably pretty close to the truth... :(

Unfortunately, in most tragedies like this, people come out of the woodwork who will try and take advantage of the situation.

Why doesn't this surprise me? It seems there are always 'vultures' out there just waiting to make a 'quick buck' anyway they can and they have no scruples when it comes to causing inconvenience and hardship to others. Take our QLD floods for instance.......

Thanks Thied! for providing all the links to the latest news about Concordia.

I now go straight to your post to get up to date and don't have to look through lots of posts on different sites.

It is also great to at last see some interviews with survivors, there is not much news over here or on You tube.
