Gydnia to Gdansk transportation

Recommended Posts

You can take a taxi directly from the pier around $60 return, but you have to 'haggle' a bit with the taxi drivers. Or you can take a taxi to the train station (about $5)and catch the train directly to Gdansk - ( end of line) the cost is around $1 but you have to pay in Zlotys, there is a currency exchange office in the station. The trains run quite regularly and take about an hour. It is an easy walk to the center of Gdansk when you leave the station. However, Princess say that they do not recommend that you take the train as there have been instances of mugging in the past, both on the station and on the train. If you go to the Port lecture given by the Cruise Director John Lawrence he will tell you all the available options.

We took the train last summer, but I only recommend it if you are rather adventurous. The Constellation provided a bus for the short trip into the city of Gydnia, and then we walked to the train station. It's not a long way, but we found few people who spoke English who could direct us. (Try to get directions in advance, perhaps from the purser or shore excursion desk.) You have to pay for the train tickets in local currency, and there is an ATM at the train station. We were fortunate to meet a local lady who helped us purchase tickets and then directed us to the correct platform. Tickets were very cheap- only $1.00 or so each way. The train took about 45 minutes to get to Gdansk. The trains are not impressive- lots of graffiti and pretty dirty. On the return, we gave ourselves plenty of time to get back to the ship just in case there were any problems with the trains. We did have a good time doing this- it made for some fun memories.
