Astro Flyer Posted March 25, 2012 #251 Share Posted March 25, 2012 (edited) Will recent cruisers please report back on this. I just read in the sticky that it is not always the starboard side but it is varies according to the captain's whim. If this is true (I hope it is an error) how can I know which side of the ship to book my balcony on. For those who think to smoke does not waft upward, I know from firsthand experience that it does. Prior to recently sailing on the Sapphire, I read that the starboard Promenade deck was always non-smoking just like on Lido deck. However for my cruise the Promenade's starboard side was the smoking area but it was portside on the Lido deck. I don't have a clue why this was so but I think having it standardized fleetwide would be the best way to do it. On the Sapphire we remained on the starboard side for the view & smoke wasn't a big consideration for us. :) Edited March 25, 2012 by Astro Flyer
Pam in CA Posted March 25, 2012 #252 Share Posted March 25, 2012 I believe the smoking side is usually port on the outside ofPromenade and Lido decks. Which ship are you on?
Dena Posted March 25, 2012 #253 Share Posted March 25, 2012 We sailed on the Sapphire in November and the starboard side was smoke free. So it varies from sailing to sailing. It sounds like I cannot plan with confidence. Celebrity also allows smoking on its portside promenade, I will check to see if this varies.
Mom33 Posted March 25, 2012 #254 Share Posted March 25, 2012 The smoke certainly does rise up from the promenad and can be detected from the balconies. I had planned to book a starboard balcony and mark it no-upgrade. Now I can't take that risk especially since the promenad will have more smokers since they can't smoke in their cabins. What deck were you on?

After the 1st time I smelled smoke on the starboard Promenade deck, I noticed the ash trays were there & not on the portside. Unfortunately that's not going to help you plan your next cabin selection. Edited March 25, 2012 by Astro Flyer

Also if enough people report back on current conditions maybe we can discern a pattern.

sprinkles Posted March 25, 2012 #259 Share Posted March 25, 2012 Sorry to cause problems over the promenade deck issue, I just thought it was important as it had been discussed on here before. Just to be clear, I was on the Sapphire Princess and they made the Starboard Promenade the smoking side, with no explanation offered and it had just been switched the week prior to our cruise. I have no clue as to what is going on with any other ships. Happy Trails, Tammy
Astro Flyer Posted March 26, 2012 #260 Share Posted March 26, 2012 (edited) I forgot to ask, whic itinerary were you on. For us it was Hawaii. Maybe it varies by itinerary. Our cruse was the Mexican Riviera & maybe it could vary on which side of the open Promenade deck gets the prevailing winds? We only went there going back to LA which was the starboard side so we could view land as we sailed from Cabo. Klabauter57 Posted March 26, 2012 #261 Share Posted March 26, 2012 I,m a cigar smoker, but appreciate generally a non smoking policy. We wre on SUN Princess recently and experienced heavy smoking on the promenade deck including crew members!! In the ports smoking on the harbourside balconies was always practiced. The only area where smoking was permitted was a windy and ugly place on der pool deck. Ohter ships have at least one bar or a smokers lounge where the allow smoking. What the hell is this policy good for, when nobody obeys?
Pamster Posted March 27, 2012 #262 Share Posted March 27, 2012 The Casino was another matter. There were two non-smoking nights (first and last formal), there was a section of about 7 tables, that yes did become the indoor smoking lounge. Happy Sailing Everybody! Tammy Thanks for the report. I was wondering, these tables in the casino - was smoking allowed there during no-smoking casino nights? Or, since they were in the casino, was no smoking allowed there either? sprinkles Posted March 27, 2012 #263 Share Posted March 27, 2012 No the area was completely non-smoking after 6:00pm. That's when you could hardly get into the door of churchill's which is very nearby. One thing I will say about the casino that may be a positive for some. If you like to play video poker. The entire bar area was non-smoking - ALWAYS - it is all a progressive bank of quarter machines, so if you like to play video poker and are "fairly accepting", that may be a place to play for some anytime. As honestly even when the casino went non-smoking, I will admit that it still reeked of cigarettes. Tammy

Wonder how close those tables are to the smoker's "lounge". I can be pretty tolerant when playing cards provided the smoke isn't blowing directly in my face (and I'm not losing too terribly). I figure it's the price I have to pay to play. If it's too bad now that it's also the smoking lounge I'll just have to save some money and go to MUTS - or maybe play video poker, that is my second favorite game. Yeah, I know what you mean about it still reeking of cigarettes - on NCL I noticed that in the mornings before anyone was in the casinos they still really smelled of smoke. Need better air handlers, I guess, like they have in Vegas. Maybe a industrial sized exhaust fan right over that smoking area. ;-) Thanks for the info. Dena Posted March 28, 2012 #265 Share Posted March 28, 2012 I think that is the name of the new pastry shop added after dry dock. It is on Plaza deck in the atrium. Can casino smoke be smelled here? Reports are that the library is now smokey, but given its new location, this is no surprise.

Can casino smoke be smelled here? Reports are that the library is now smokey, but given its new location, this is no surprise. I was on the first cruise after the dry dock. The only place in the atrium I could smell smoke was near the Passenger Services area. The casino is on 6, the IC on 5. And nowhere in the atrium was it smokey - just the odor. paul929207 Posted March 28, 2012 #267 Share Posted March 28, 2012 Since there is no guarentee that things will be the same from cruise to cruise, check it out and see if there is a problem when you are there
San Diego Ellie Posted March 29, 2012 #268 Share Posted March 29, 2012 I never smelled smoke anywhere in the atrium, and I was on Sapphire for two weeks February/March. The library is a different story; it is located near the casino, and if I recall directly, also the cigar lounge.
houch Posted March 29, 2012 #269 Share Posted March 29, 2012 Tammy, thanks for the info. I cruise in May. My friend doesn't smoke so I don't smoke in the roon but have enjoyed having a cig on the balcony. We didn't book a balcony for this cruise so nice to know where I can go to have my morning coffee and cig. I sure won't be spending much time in the room. I hope the smoking area on the pool deck won't be too crowded to find a table to sit at.
katiepe Posted April 1, 2012 #270 Share Posted April 1, 2012 So glad to find this thread. DH is a smoker so we havent looked at sailing Princess since the new rules. I am an occasional "bad person";) so can do without if necessary It is great to see there are still some places for him to smoke so maybe we actually can go back to our favourite line! [sic] Thank you soo much for this info as we are booked in an Emerald Deck mini for our cruise in October and have worried about the smoke from the Promenade deck ruining our enjoyment of our balcony. I have puzzled as to why Princess just didn't move the smoking area more mid ship as there would be no balconies above that area.

That would be really good. Especially since the outdoor smoking areas seem to be on port side - except for the promenade deck ?? I think they're in a state of 'flux' right now trying to see what works best. I'm thinking, like someone previously posted - they don't want people smoking port side on the promenade deck due to refueling while in port. Just a thought.
