do we need an excursion

If you just want to shop in the tourist spots and grab lunch and drinks, you can do that with no problem - although a few too many drinks usually results in some fool missing his ship every time.

Coz is an island with many beautiful beaches -- everything from pay as you go places like Paradise Beach to all inclusive beach clubs like Mr. Sanchos & Nachi Cocom to nearly deserted beaches on the other side of the island. It's easy to grab a cab and be at the beach of your choice in 10-15 minutes.

What you do is up to you - do nothing, go to the beach, or book a tour and snorkel, etc. Good luck! :)

We were in Cozumel in November and we didn't plan an excursion. We decided to find a beach and go snorkeling for a little while, then walk through all of the shops at the pier. We ended up taking a taxi from the pier to the MoneyBar, a restaurant that has a beach where you can either lay on a lounge chair or go snorkeling. The taxi for 4 of us cost $8 total each way. The Money Bar is a very short drive from the pier (5 mins max) so it's easy to get back to the boat and shopping area quickly. We didn't rush to get off the ship in the morning so we took our time then went to the beach for a few hours, went back to the ship to change then got back off the ship to go shopping. Have fun!!

On our first trip to Cozumel, we just cabbed it to San Miguel and explored. If you're beachy type people, as mentioned above, you can go to a relatively inexpensive beach resort or a non-resort beach. We did this our second trip and it was good.

Both easily done.
