Experience of non smokers

And what if a majority of smokers abandon X or Princess and go to HAL

And non smokers go the opposite way? As some have already said they will do

$$$ signs are more influential to corporation than comments and requests

We'll have to wait and see.

I personally expect to see veranda smokers from "X" and Princess move over to verandas on HAL.

If/when that becomes fact, we will make our choices based on our personal experience.

Some non-smokers just don't get it. They have choices just the same as smokers do and while they continue to spend their money on balconies they may or may not be able to use then the cruiselines are happy. I think some people, especially those who want to sit on their balcony all day and all night and rarely get off the ship, should consider a land-based holiday and a non-smoking hotel room with a balcony and a sea-view. After all, it really doesn't matter where in the world you are - the end result is the same:) Give up your "perks" - from what I can see they're not worth a lot anyway.

I'm sorry, I do not like second hand smoke either. But I would not have the nerve to ask someone not to smoke or "work out a schedule" on their own balcony which they paid for and is an approved smoking area. That is probably the main reason they booked with HAL because they could smoke on THEIR balcony where smoking IS permitted. If you don't like HAL's smoking policy, book with someone else. Don't expect your neighbors to conform to your every wish.

Some people on this board really seem to think the world and HAL should revolve around them.

Well, then, it looks like you'll just have to suffer doesn't it? Or find a non-smoking cruiseline. We are non-smokers too - have always been, but we understand the universe was not created for our needs alone.

Just booked an Alaska cruise with HAL and came upon this thread. Have to admit I was more concerned when researching my cruise I was more focused on itinerary first. Having been on Celebrity and HAL, loved them both, I chose HAL for the itinerary.

Being next to a smoker with the above attitude, is WHY I would not want to speak to the cabin next me about their smoking. ( yes I read where Wannaknow is NON smoker)

Just like when people fret about the cold and rain in Alaska, they STILL take a chance and go.(Have to understand the universe(Alaska) was not created for me) and take rain gear.

I will be prepared for the smoker next to me on my balcony with this attitude. Taking along a gas mask. Hope I can get it in my carry-on.

Ready for a break from the cold but going to Alaska anyway!

No, I don't think that the world revolves around me, I just feel that I should be able to sit out on my balcony without having to breathe second hand smoke. Just because someone has paid for something, doesn't mean that they have the right to subject others to their pollution. No doubt HAL will soon adopt a 21st Century smoking policy simliar to other lines.

On a more positive note, we just came back two weeks ago from a wonderful cruise on the Noordam. I am pleased to report that we had balcony neighbors who were non-smokers. The only place where smoke bothered me was in the casino, and I beat a hasty retreat and took my money with me.;)

It's easy to be sure you don't breathe second hand smoke if it is a major concern to you. Don't book a balcony cabin on HAL. Smokers have the right to smoke on their HAL balcony, that's no secret, and if that means there is second hand smoke (with a metal wall between balconies you probably are smelling more smoke than you could possibly be breathing in) it was a chance YOU decided to take.

One thing is for certain, a significant majority of smokers simply don't give a hoot about non-smokers. Really. They just don't care. Their choice in life is to take breaths while sucking the extremely unhealthy and carcenogenic ingredients of a burning roll of tobacco into their lungs on a regular basis. How can anyone expect people doing that sort of thing to care at all about other folks who don't?

I actually believe that my "right" (or whatever you call it) to clean air trumps the so-called rights of smokers to polute that air. Your mileage may vary.

Smoking tobacco is a substance that would have long since been outlawed as a hazmat, if not for the tax money generated off of it.

I wouldn't mind any cruise line having a small out of the way aft corner of the ship set aside for smokers.

Actually I would disagree with this. Many smokers are 'super sensitive' to the concerns of today. I think they would be very happy to make some type of arrangement. Most smokers are real people and many are very, very considerate (and possibly ashamed or embarrassed that they are addicted). Nevertheless, they are real people:D and like most people, some are nice and some not so. But most, would be happy to discuss as long as the other party was reasonable:) JMO and my experience:)

I no longer smoke, but I feel that ALL people have rights...I know it is an addiction, and I know it is not the healthiest of habits, but it is not illegal. On a recent cruise I was knocked over by an inconsiderate woman on a power scooter who informed me that it was my place to move out of her way and not hers to be considerate, and what about the heavy drinkers who knock into people when walking around the ship? I have a mobility problem and have not yet recovered from the pain caused by the power scooter incident after 6 months, ( no claim or whinges by myself), should I then call for a move to ban them on all ships simply because some of them are selfish and arrogant enough to believe that their disability extends to their manners? The vast majority of people with smoking addictions etc are great people as are other people with afflictions, give them the right to live their lives. Approach them and explain yourself nicely, and not in an arrogant bombastic manner and most times problems can be overcome. I have learnt that almost everyone has some form of annoying habit that has to be dealt with. Just my opinion as a former smoker.

I don't really think the smokers get it either. They used to stink up the rooms & now it's the casino's & balconies plus a few other areas & in general they smell. I dread having to sit next to a smoker in the show lounge & have to put up with the odor of stale tobacco.

To be honest, I can put up with a neighbor who smokes on their verandah given that it is allowed out there and I can always go back into my cabin. I'm just grateful that smoking is no longer permitted in cabins as our cabin was intolerable on our last Oo cruise. It took a couple of days, deodorizer, ionizer, and changing of some soft goods before the cabin was tolerable. A first in over a dozen cruises.

My quest, is for clean, fresh air. Mess with that, and I'm at odds with you. I've had asthma all my life (like almost 59 years). Air polutants cause me problems. I know that's my problem, so I don't need to be reminded.

This thread is controversial enough, so I won't get started on fragrances.

It is my opinion that a fraction of the non smoking public will give no quarter until the ships are smoke free. Once i went on a whale excursion in Alaska. The boat I was on was perhaps 60 foot long and held perhaps 100 people. The Captain of that craft announced at the beginning of the excursion that smoking would be permitted only on the lower fantail in the aft. Fair enough. This area was was the width of the boat and only about 6 feet deep.

Upon spotting whales, here comes this lady charging down the stairs screaming put out your smokes, I wanna take a picture. How considerate or fair was that?

I am 69 years old and I remember a time when smokers and non smokers got along and were much more tolerant of each other. I am a non smoker. I however have a friend who smokes. She would not think of smoking in our house which is smoke free. I however value her friendship and when she comes to visit I dig out my old ashtray and out the lanai we go. That is an accommodation that satisfactory to the both of us.

I know that I have rambled on, the point of this is that those who cannot tolerate any smoke perhaps would find happiness in booking a cruise line which has no tolerance for smoking.

I don't think the majority of smokers don't give a hoot about non-smokers. They just get fed up with non-smokers thinking they have the right to control smoking even in the smoking-allowed areas.

You hit it right on the head! HA allows smoking on your balcony. Plain and simple.

I'm not sure how smokers are being "inconsiderate" smoking on their balconies. Clearly YOU booked your cabin with balcony in a smoking section. That is not the fault of a smoker. You had a choice and booked in a smoking area. Non-smokers have trouble acknowledging that and taking the blame themselves if they are not happy.

I always laugh when the suggestion is made to "work out a schedule" with balcony smokers near your balcony. Again- you booked in the smoking section' date=' but the onus is put on the smokers to give something up which HAL allows just to make you happy. If I as a smoker walked up to the Lido Bar, a non-smoking area, and asked you to "work out a schedule" during the day where I could enjoy a cigarette with a drink, because that is what I like, would you agree? I wouldn't think of asking and you wouldn't think of agreeing to that, so why should it be that smokers are more unless expected to agree to smoke on their balconies just when it is convenient for you? They booked a ship where smoking is allowed on balconies. So did you. Whose fault is that? Why should HAL give a refund?[/quote']

I believe the poster to whom you are referring was talking about sailing on a Celebrity ship which does NOT allow smoking in any cabin OR balcony!

As relatively new cruisers (but experienced travelers) I was disheartened to read this thread. I had no idea when we booked our last minute cruise on HAL that smoking was allowed on balconies. I assumed that smoking was such a fire hazard on ships that it would be a verboten activity except in specific areas on the ship (which we have experienced on Celebrity and the PG). We booked this cruise based on itinerary and date - I had no idea that HAL had such a relaxed smoking policy.

We enjoy our balcony - especially on 'at sea' days, of which we have 3 on our upcoming cruise.

I hope that we can enjoy the fresh sea air, and not be overwhelmed by second hand smoke.

I am really getting a lot of laughs from this thread. Nothing like a good discussion between smokers and non-smokers.

And, Kracker Ken, you are so right. We smokers don't care what you non-smokers think. We booked HAL because we can smoke on the balcony and we're going to smoke on the balcony whenever we want to. We have very little choice these days, but you have lots of choices. Take one of them.

If I were you I would seriously consider booking with X where smoking is not allowed in any stateroom, on any balcony/verandah & casino, (among many other locations)! :) I have cruised twice with X on two of their M-Class ships :), enjoyed them both, & I read that the new S-Class ships are wonderful too!
